PHILADELPHIA, PA. (January 29, 2017) – Senior
Erica Guketlov recorded 12 points on four three-point baskets and graduate student
Kaitlyn Astel tallied 11 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 89-43, in a non-conference matchup at The Palestra Sunday.
Juniors
Anna Toke and
Megan Brown combined for 12 rebounds and freshman
Zoe Hahn scored eight points off the bench, but the Ducks were unable to match Penn's size as the Ivy League team held a 54-34 edge in rebounds and a 44-4 edge in points in the paint. The loss dropped Stevens to 9-8 on the season.
Michelle Nwokedi led all players with 15 points and Sydney Stipanovich added 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Quakers, who improved to 10-6 overall.
Tonight's game counted towards both teams overall records, but will not affect their standings in the NCAA RPI.
Stevens remains tied with Hartwick College atop the Empire 8 Conference standings.
Turning Point
- After Astel's layup opened the game's scoring, Guketlov hit the first of her four threes to give the Ducks a 5-4 advantage.
- The Quakers immediately answered on a Nwokedi layup.
- The quick basket was part of a 15-0 Penn run over the final 4:14 of the opening period as the Quakers opened a 19-5 lead. Thirteen of the 15 points were recorded by Stipanovich and Nwokedi.
- Hahn closed the stanza with the first of her two three-point baskets to pull the Ducks to within 12.
- Stevens opened the second quarter with five straight points to pull within seven, but the Ducks would go scoreless over the next 9:21 to fall behind by 16 at the half.
Inside the Numbers
- Guketlov reached double-digits for the fourth time in 16 games.
- The senior guard led the team in points for the first time this season.
- The 89 points were the most by a Stevens opponent this season.
- All 12 players saw the court for the second consecutive game.
- The matchup with Penn closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Unsung Hero
- Junior Brooke Stoddard continued to patrol the glass for the Ducks, recording five boards off the bench. She has tallied five or more rebounds off the bench in six games this season.
