UTICA, N.Y. (January 3, 2017) – Five different Ducks scored in double figures Tuesday night as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team cruised to a 91-73 road win over Utica in the Empire 8 opener.
The win moved Stevens to 7-2 (1-0), while Utica fell to 0-10 (0-1).
Senior
Evan Klimchak led the way for Stevens with 20 points in addition to a pair of rebounds and three assists, while senior
Patrick Barron went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 14. Sophomore
Ryan Coffey went for 11 points and six boards, and freshman
Colin McKenna tallied career highs with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Junior
Chris Cosgrove scored 11 on 5-of-8 shooting to round out Stevens' double-digit scorers.
As a team Stevens shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent from the beyond the arc, and forced 14 Utica turnovers.
With the game deadlocked at 20 nearing the midway point of the opening half, sophomore
Jayson Winick drained a three to spark an 8-0 Stevens run. Utica ended the drought with one of its own from behind the arc, but a three from sophomore
Conor Barron started a 7-0 spurt to put the Ducks up 12 with 4:32 to go.
McKenna gave Stevens its largest lead of the night at 15 with a layup one minute later, before senior
Michael Signer hit a jumper at the buzzer to put the Ducks up by 11 heading into the half.
Stevens added to its lead early in the second after a pair of threes from
Patrick Barron ballooned the lead to 19, followed by one from Klimchak two minutes later to make it 22.
Coffey made it 25 at the 12-minute mark off a layup, giving Stevens more than enough of a cushion as Utica never got closer than 13 for the remainder of regulation.
Stevens will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Elmira in its home conference opener.
