Alvarez’s Hat Trick Wins for Field Hockey in OT

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 11, 2017) – Junior Victoria Alvarez scored three goals - including the overtime game-winner - as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey program erased a two-goal deficit to top Stockton University 4-3 on Wednesday night.

The Ducks were down 2-0 for much of the first half. The Ospreys scored in the seventh minute and then added another in the 27th. Alexa Massa assisted both markers for Stockton.

Stevens struck back with one minute remaining in the first period. Alvarez dribbled past two defenders and uncorked a blast from the top of the circle that nobody got a piece of to cut the Osprey lead in half going into the break.

10 minutes into the second half, the Ducks earned a penalty corner. Victoria Zanlunghi inserted the ball to Cassidy O'Hearn, who cranked a hard shot from the top of the circle right to the plywood to knot the game at two-all.

Stevens completely flipped the run of play in the second half. After being outshot 10-6 in the first half, the Ducks led the second period shot count 16-5. Izy Engel also had a defensive save in the second half to help keep the Ducks in the game.

The Ducks took the lead at 51:02, when Janet Vill's long shot created a juicy rebound for Alvarez, who slammed it home for her second goal.

The advantage was short-lived however. Britney Stein tied it up for Stockton with help from Alexa Massa's third assist of the night.

The teams were scoreless over the final 20 minutes of regulation, though Skylar Migliaccio had two excellent chances that were smothered by Stockton goalie Emily Sorochynsky late in regulation.

In overtime, the Ducks took the only shot when O'Hearn and Alvarez found themselves on a breakaway. Alvarez sent the ball to O'Hearn, who touched it back to Alvarez who sent it home for the game-winner.

"We showed incredible heart tonight!" said head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz "The come back from a deficit showed who we are as a team and the level that we are capable of playing. We've worked on overtime play this week and the girls executed perfectly. Many players had fantastic games, but Victoria Alvarez was an unstoppable offensive threat for us. We will take this momentum into our next games and continue to grow."

  • Stevens led the corner count 6-4
  • Nicole Mottole earned the win in goal with six saves on the night

The Ducks will hit the road for another NJAC matchup on Friday at 7 p.m. against William Paterson University.
