10/13/2017 10:33:00 PM

Box Score WAYNE, N.J. (October 13, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team did not score until the 55-minute mark, but scored three goals in the final 15 to stun William Paterson University 3-2 on Friday night.

Victoria Alvarez scored the final two goals, including the final one with less than four minutes to go.

  • The Ducks had fallen behind 1-0 at 15:31 when Andrea Mauro of the Pioneers was helped by Michaela Mellier for the game's first goal
  • Stevens managed only two shots in the first half. WPU fired four shots in each half
  • The game was otherwise scoreless through halftime and for 40 total minutes until Cassidy O'Hearn got a feed from Victoria Zanlunghi off a corner to knot the game at one
  • The Ducks took a total of 22 penalty corners and allowed just five in the game
  • The Pioneers quickly gained the lead back, however. Mauro struck again with an assist from Carly Miceli off a corner to give WPU the lead with less than 10 minutes to go
  • Another Duck corner offered the answer; Alvarez was fed by Janet Vill off the penalty insert from the left wing to the goal mouth as Stevens knotted it up again
  • Less than three minutes later, the Ducks capitalized on a bad clearance off the goal line when Regan Littell sent a pass to Alvarez that she slammed home for the first lead of the game for Stevens with just 3:43 remaining on the scoreboard
  • Nicole Mottole and the Duck D held on for their sixth win of the season
  • Mottole made five saves in the game and Izy Engel also made a big defensive save for the Ducks in the contest

"Another great comeback for the Ducks!" said head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz. "We'll continue to work on capitalizing early, but the team put on relentless pressure and didn't back down on a fast WP team. Every day we click more and more and we're excited about our next few games and finishing out the season strong."

Stevens will remain on the road and head to Manhattanville College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Valients.
