HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 14, 2017) – Senior
Sandi Komar scored 34 seconds into the match, and
Gabby Saade and
Morgan Lynn factored in three goals apiece as the Stevens women's soccer program took down Alfred University 4-0 in Empire 8 play on Saturday. The match served as Senior Day for the program's eight members of the class of 2018.
- Komar scored her first goal of the season in the first minute, as Saade slid a pass from the goal line into the six-yard box for Komar to finish off
- 10 minutes later, Komar hit the crossbar in an early bid for her second goal
- Despite being on the wrong end of play for much of the first half, the Saxons nearly got the equalizer on a series of three corner kicks. But Lindsey Mahnken made two saves in that span to keep the Ducks in front
- Stevens had numerous other good chances, but Sammy Jo Shanahan made a total of 16 saves – many of them outright robberies – to keep her side in the match throughout the day
- The Ducks finally broke through again in the 24th minute. Morgan Lynn netted her first of the season when Saade slid another good pass into the box for the finish. The score remained 2-0 through halftime
- After 30 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, Lynn scored her second of the game, floating a ball from the top of the 18-yard box over the goalkeeper and into the twine with an assist from Julia Panko.
- Less than a minute later, Saade capped the scoring when Panko and Lynn tapped a pair of exquisite passes back to her for a blast that made the count 4-0
- Stevens outshot the Saxons 29-4 on the day
- Mahnken earned her fifth shutout of the season. Erika McCarthy saw action in the final seven minutes between the pipes
"It was important to get off to a strong start today and was good to get a few different names on the scoresheet," said head coach
Jeff Parker. "Some standout moments, but we were also not as assertive as we want to be in some others. Aiming to put together a solid 90 minutes in our upcoming matches this week and looking forward to seeing how we perform."
The Ducks will remain home to tangle with national No. 3 The College of New Jersey on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
