No. 14 Women’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with Vassar

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 3, 2017) – Midfielder Olivia Butera earned an assist and a goal-line save to lead the No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team in its matchup with Vassar College as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in Hoboken on Tuesday. Gabby Saade scored the Ducks' only goal of the evening in the 23rd minute

  • Amanda McFarland scored the game's opening goal in the seventh minute on a pass by Emily Longo from the goalline to the six-yard box.
  • Vassar's early score marked only the second time the Ducks have trailed in a match all season
  • Saade and Stevens answered with a beautiful goal set up by Butera. The junior curled a pass into the box for Saade, who headed it past the goaltender for her seventh goal of the season
  • Butera later saved the Ducks with a header save on the goal line following a Brewer corner kick late in the second half. She was the last line of defense, headed the ball up and it was subsequently snared out of the air by Stevens goalie Lindsey Mahnken.
  • There was a great save by Vassar's Fiona Walsh with three minutes to go. Saade fired a laser at the goal in a bid for the game-winner but the goaltender punched it just over the crossbar.
  • The final shot count was 28-15 in favor of Stevens.
  • The Ducks put 13 shots on goal to the Brewers' nine; Mahnken finished with eight saves and Walsh had a dozen

"(It was) a big test for our group tonight against a very solid Vassar squad," said head coach Jeff Parker. "(We) gave up an early goal and trailed for just the second time all season, but proud of our response. Created some excellent chances and had to respond to their unsettling counterattacks all evening. Overall, we gave just about everything we had on the night and were unable to find the winning goal. A bit hard to digest as we could have come out on top, but Vassar nearly found that same winner themselves. Proud of this group and looking forward to seeing them take the field again together on the E8 weekend ahead."

The Ducks will hit the road on Saturday for a pivotal Empire 8 matchup with Nazareth College at noon in Rochester. The Golden Flyers are the only other Empire 8 school receiving votes in the national poll.
