PITTSFORD, N.Y (October 7, 2017) – Nazareth College scored with 85 seconds remaining in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie and earn a victory over the No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team in Empire 8 play on Saturday.
The Stevens women's soccer team had not lost an Empire 8 regular season match in 21 outings, with only one tie in that streak as well. The last team to knock off the Ducks was the Golden Flyers on October 18, 2017, nearly three years ago.
Julia Delgatti scored all three Naz goals to earn a hat trick in the match. The first came at 32:16 with an assist from Paige Sullivan.
Five minutes later the Ducks struck back when
Erin Mellett scored on a carom off a free kick by Naz and the ball found its way into the Flyer cage.
Stevens took the lead early in the second half;
Julia Panko notched an unassisted tally via a free kick from just outside the box that made the count 2-1.
The Ducks held the lead for more than 20 minutes, but at 75:48 Samantha Sansone set up Delgatti for the tying score. As the clock ticked toward the end of regulation, it was Mia Strollo who set up Delgatti for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Stevens outshot Naz by one, 21-20. The Ducks also had a 7-2 edge in corners.
Goalkeeper Hannah Miller made 11 saves to earn the victory for Naz. Stevens'
Lindsey Mahnken added nine stops.
"Entertaining and wide-open match between these two sides today," said head caoch
Jeff Parker. "Looked like both teams were quite comfortable in their tactics and definitely took turns bossing the match. We did some good things today, but struggled as well at closing down a few dangerous areas and were punished by it. We've got to make some headway in a few specific areas and we'll address those issues. Everyone is now checking every tiebreak procedure now that the conference race is so congested. We have to regroup and get ready for St. John Fisher tomorrow."
The Ducks will cross the street in Pittsford tomorrow to tangle with St. John Fisher College in a 1 p.m. Empire 8 match tomorrow.
