Field Hockey Wins Barn-Burner with New Paltz

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 4, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team outgunned SUNY New Paltz 5-3 in a back-and forth Wednesday night matchup in Hoboken. Cassidy O'Hearn and Victoria Alvarez scored two goals apiece for the Ducks in the game. Katti Thomasian added the other goal and also assisted both of Alvarez's scores.

  • O'Hearn netted the first goal at 7:05 with an assist from Alvarez on a good pass from the end line after Alvarez had gained the zone.
  • The Hawks scored the next two, grabbing the lead away with goals by Carly Croteau and Kaitlyn Gunter at 13:02 and 25:57, respectively
  • O'Hearn then knotted the game up with an incredible play, whacking the ball out of midair after Hannah Silvestri's shot was tipped to shoulder-height in front of the cage
  • Two minutes later, Alvarez scored when she gathered a rebound in front and slammed it home for the go-ahead goal
  • With 0:00 on the clock at the end of the first half but Stevens taking a penalty corner, Thomasian ripped a shot from the outside off Regan Littell's insert into the plywood to end the half and double the Duck lead to 4-2. It would turn out to be the game-winning goal
  • New Paltz's Serena Capsello got the Hawks back within one at 50:23 of the second half by tipping in a shot by Gunter
  • Five minutes later, Alvarez and Thomasian hooked up again for some insurance, with Alvarez again tipping in Thomasian's shot
  • Stevens' Drew Lustig made two defensive saves within a minute of each other in the second half to help preserve the Stevens lead. She is leading the Empire 8 and second in the nation with seven defensive saves this season
  • Nicole Mottole made an additional five saves in goal for the Ducks

"I'm so proud of the way we played today," said head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz. "We were hunting for a good win and they worked for it for 70 minutes. We weathered some storms from New Paltz in the backfield but we responded big when we needed to. A lot of players contributed but Drew Lustig was a particular star tonight with two defensive saves and some key stops."

The Ducks will travel through upstate New York for a pivotal Empire 8 weekend with games at Houghton College and Nazareth College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The matchup with the Highlanders will begin at noon on Saturday.
