Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Charles O'Brien

Late rally falls short as No. 21 Ithaca upends Women’s Basketball

HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 9, 2017)  – Senior Megan Brown scored a season-high 19 points and classmate Anna Toke registered her third straight double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to No. 21 Ithaca College, 80-71 Saturday in non-conference action at Canavan Arena.

Freshman Christina Li came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points, but Ithaca was able to convert 30 Stevens turnovers into 29 points to earn a nine-point victory. Ithaca's Cassidy O'Malley led all players with a career-high 30 points, including 12 from the free throw line. As a team, Ithaca shot 21-of-26 from the line (81 percent) to earn its fourth consecutive victory. The Bombers improved to 7-1, while Stevens fell to 3-5. The Ducks have dropped three straight contests to their former Empire 8 rival. The game marked the final non-conference game at Canavan Arena this season. Stevens will play at Trinity College on January 16 to round out non-conference play.

After being down by as many as 22 in the third quarter, an energized stretch saw the Ducks chip away at Ithaca's lead, pulling to within nine midway through the final stanza, but the Ducks were unable to draw any closer.

Turning Point
  • A pair of Toke free throws trimmed a double-digit deficit to four with three minutes to play in the first half.
  • Julie Yacovoni hit a short jumper to push the Ithaca lead to 36-30.
  • Stevens turned the ball over on its next possession and Yacavoni hit another jumper to push the lead to eight.
  • Li made the first of two free throws, but Yacavoni would score her third straight basket to give the guests a nine-point advantage. Yacavoni converted the three-point play after being fouled on her layup to again give Ithaca a double-digit lead.
  • The Ithaca lead would swell to 13 before a Toke jumper trimmed to lead to 11 at the half.

  • Sophomore Alison Criswell scored a season-high 11 points.

  • Senior Sydney Darby went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
  • Brown sank her first career three-point basket for the final points of the game.

From the Court
  • "Turnovers made it difficult to get into any offensive flow. We also got outrebounded in the first half, which can't happen."
  • "I was very proud of our team for fighting, and the senior leadership. We grew during the first half of the season, and as long as we continue to learn, we will continue to improve."

Up Next
  • Stevens begins 2018 with an Empire 8 Conference matchup with Elmira College on January 2.
