HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 18, 2017) – Three Ducks tallied double-doubles as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team sealed up the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Empire 8 Championship Saturday evening with a 94-86 overtime win over Nazareth in Hoboken.
Down three with 38 seconds remaining, sophomore
Jayson Winick hit two from the line to get the Ducks to within one. Naz turned the ball over on its next possession, before Winick hit one more from the line to tie the game at 80 and send it into overtime.
Once there, Stevens used an 11-3 run over the final two minutes to clinch the victory as freshman
Colin McKenna put the finishing touches on it with a layup in the closing seconds.
The win moved Stevens to 18-7 (11-5), while Naz fell to 15-10 (9-7). The Ducks captured the win despite not hitting a single three.
Senior
Evan Klimchak led Stevens with 22 points, while sophomore
Ryan Coffey tallied a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. McKenna also recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 boards, in addition to one from Winick of 14 points and 11 boards.
Stevens forced 11 Naz turnovers, and held the Golden Flyers to just 27 percent (6-for-22) shooting from beyond the arc.
The Ducks built a nine-point lead midway through the first off a 6-0 run, but a 7-0 Naz run provided an answer and cut the advantage to two. Stevens held that lead until a layup tied the game at 31 with under two to play, but a pair of jumpers from freshman
Spencer Cook wrapped around a layup from Klimchak placed the lead at two heading into the break.
Naz did pull ahead seven minutes into the second, and held the lead over the next seven minutes until two at the line from Klimchak capped a 6-0 run to put Stevens ahead by one with under seven to play. Neither team pulled ahead by more than three for the remainder of regulation however, before Stevens pulled away in the extra frame for the win.
With the regular season now behind them, Stevens will now set its sights to the E8 semifinal Friday night against Utica at 8 p.m.
