GLENSIDE, Pa. (February 18, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team shutout Arcadia for the first three quarters Saturday afternoon en route to a 14-2 season-opening road win.
The win was the 11th in-a-row on opening day for the Ducks as they picked up their second double-digit win in as many seasons against Arcadia.
Sophomore
Max Bailey served as a key catalyst on offense with a career-high seven assists in addition to a goal, while junior captain
Tommy Dawson scored three times with one helper. Freshman
Brendan Monteleone scored twice in his collegiate debut, in addition to a two-goal day for sophomore
Dean Peluso. As a team Stevens saw scoring from 10 different individuals.
Defensively Stevens caused eight turnovers in front of five saves from sophomore goalie
Carson White, and won the ground-ball margin 28-17. The Ducks went 17-for-18 on clear attempts, and ruled in face offs 17-3 keyed by 13 wins for sophomore
Nicholas Carnovale.
The Ducks swarmed Arcaida goalie Danny Lipkin with three shots over the game's first three minutes, before sophomore
Eric Radbourne's man-up score shortly after gave Stevens its first lead of the season. Junior
Bryan Rogers added to it one minute later, followed by goals from junior
John Boutureira, senior
Connor McKeon, senior
Tim Leahey, and Dawson to close out a dominating opening quarter in which Stevens outshot the Knights 21-1.
The Ducks defense took control in the second, limiting Arcadia to just two shots over the first eight minutes which were each saved by White. Monteleone took advantage of the Knights drought with two scores with under two to play, in addition to one from Peluso to give Stevens a 9-0 lead at the half.
Dawson quickly made it 11-0 with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of the third each assisted by Bailey, before getting into the assist column six minutes later on a feed to Peluso. Bailey got into the scoring with under three to play to make it 13-0, followed by another from freshman
Kyle Skurchak to send the Ducks into the fourth up 14.
Arcadia did finally break through four minutes into the final quarter, and added another with under seven to play, but it's the last shot they would get on goal as Stevens held the Knights shot-less over the final four minutes while forcing a pair of turnovers to close out the victory.
Stevens will now set its sights to the 2017 home opener next Saturday against Endicott at 1 p.m. in Hoboken.
