Second-half comeback powers women’s basketball to victory over Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (February 3, 2017)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team used a 48-28 edge in the second half to rally from a 10-point first-half deficit to come from behind and defeat Elmira College, 83-71, in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Friday.

Junior Megan Brown recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Ducks. Classmate Anna Take added a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and graduate student Kaitlyn Astel added a team-high 25 points as Stevens improved to 11-8 on the season and 10-1 in E8 play. With the victory, the Ducks remain atop the conference standings.

Danielle Clearly led all players with 27 points and Rachel Vespucci added 14 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass, to lead Elmira. The Soaring Eagles fell to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Turning Point
  • After being behind by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Ducks chipped away at Elmira's lead in the third quarter.
  • Brown's converted three-point play regained the lead for Stevens (49-47) with 3:58 in the frame.
  • Toke drained a short jumper to extend the lead to four.
  • Elmira tied the game at 53 after back-to-back threes by Cleary surrounding a Toke layup.
  • Toke nailed a pair of free throws to immediately reclaim the lead for Stevens. 
  • Brown followed with back-to-back layups to extend the lead to six (59-53) to close the third quarter.

Inside the Numbers
  • After shooting 50% in the first half, the Ducks improved that number to 63.3% (19-for-30) in the second half.
  • On the defensive end, Stevens forced Elmira into 7-of-32 (22%) in the second half, including 2-for-8 from behind the arc. 
  • The Soaring Eagles nearly had as many points from the free throw line (12) as they did from the field (16) over the game's final 20 minutes.
  • Both teams had 42 rebounds. Stevens had a 31-21 edge on the defensive glass.
  • The Ducks held a big edge in points in the paint 52-30.
  • Stevens also had the edge in points off turnovers, fast-break points, and bench points.
  • A smothering Stevens defense forced Elmira into more turnovers than assists
  • Toke and Brown combined for five blocks. Elmira did not deflect a single shot.
  • Senior Erica Guketlov grabbed a season-best four steals.
  • The three leading scorers for the Ducks combined to shoot 27-for-42 (64%) from the field.

Unsung Hero
  • Toke's previous career best was a 15-point performance against Nazareth, on January 20.
  • The junior's 12 defensive rebounds also marked a career high.
  • Astel (5) and Guketlov (6) combined for 11 assists as the Ducks notched a season-high 24 assists.

  • "I thought we focused on our team defensive effort in the second half and made stops we weren't getting in the first half."
