ITHACA, N.Y. (February 4, 2017) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball senior
Patrick Barron became the 21st member of the 1,000-point club Saturday in the Ducks 98-88 Empire 8 road win over Ithaca.
The win moved Stevens to 16-4 (10-2), while Ithaca fell to 6-15 (2-10). Barron eclipsed the mark with a three three minutes into regulation, joining senior
Evan Klimchak as the two active members of the exclusion club.
Barron finished with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting, while five Ducks in total hit double figures led by 21 from Klimchak. Freshman
Spencer Cook scored 14, and sophomore
Jayson Winick went for 13 points and four rebounds. In the paint, junior
Thomas Cook and sophomore
Ryan Coffey combined for 17 boards.
Stevens shot 50 percent from the field and 48 percent from three, while defensively forcing 18 turnovers on the Bombers.
Ithaca jumped out to a 24-8 lead nine minutes into regulation, but Stevens rallied with a 13-5 run capped by a three from Coffey to get within eight with under seven to play. The Bombers responded with strong shooting to pull back ahead by 14 during the three-minute mark, but Stevens once again rallied with a 9-2 capped by a three from Klimchak to get within seven with 1:36 left on the clock.
Ithaca stopped Stevens' run with a three throw, before the Ducks ended the half with two from Barron and a three from freshman
Dylan Walsh in the closing seconds to pull within three heading into the break.
The Ducks continued to keep it close during the early parts of the second, eventually tying the game at 52 three minutes in with a three from Barron. The Bombers connected on one deep on the ensuing possession to get back in front, but nine unanswered from Stevens over the next three minutes made it 61-55 Ducks with 14:16 to go.
Stevens went ahead by as much as 16 with under nine to play, and maintained that double-digit lead over the next seven minutes. Ithaca did get within eight with a short 6-2 spurt late in regulation, but it's as close as they would get as Stevens allowed just five points over the final two minutes to close out the win.
Stevens will break off from conference play Tuesday night in a road date with NYU, before playing its final two E8 road matchups at Alfred and Houghton next weekend.
