Gabe Shankweiler and freshman
David Lehman totaled 35 kills on 69 attacks with just seven errors as No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball defeated No. 5 Wentworth Institute of Technology (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) and came from behind to edge Endicott College (25-16, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10) to sweep the Wentworth Tri-Match Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Thomas Burrell recorded 13 kills on 15 attacks and sophomore Dylan Deboer notched 11 kills in the dramatic five-set victory over the Gulls. With the sweep, the Ducks moved to 8-0 on the season.
Sean Mullen notched 10 kills and Collin Ritter dished out 16 assists for the Leopards, who rallied to defeat Endicott in the final game of the tri-match. Wentworth closed play at 6-2.
Bryn Lipton tallied 15 kills and Donovan Dey added 11 for Endicott, who fell to 4-8.
Volleys and Points
- After Stevens and Wentworth alternated the first 16 points, Stevens finally took control of the first set after a Lehman Kill and a Wentworth attack error.
- The Ducks would keep the Leopards at a two-point distance until 18-15.
- Wentworth rallied on back-to-back kills to pull within 1 (18-17).
- Seven straight points by Stevens closed out the first set. Shankweiler tallied a kill and an ace in the run.
- In the second set, a Lehman kill opened the scoring.
- The teams again traded points until reaching 8-8.
- Three errors and kills by Lehman and Shankweiler produced a 13-8 lead.
- Wentworth would rally, taking a 19-18 lead on an Ollie Oshman kill.
- The teams would again trade points before reaching 23-all.
- Kills by Stuart and Shankweiler closed out the second set.
- Downed two sets, Wentworth opened its biggest lead of the match at 8-3.
- After a timeout, the Ducks continued to chip away at the lead before finally drawing even at 20.
- A Shankweiler ace reclaimed a 21-20 lead for Stevens and forced a Wentworth timeout.
- In the opening set against Endicott, Burrell opened a two-point leads on a Burrell kill and an Endicott error.
- Stevens maintained the lead throughout the set, finally extending the lead to four at 13-9.
- Back-to-back Gull errors allowed Stevens to open a 21-15 and back-to-back Endicott errors closed out the first set.
- Three errors and a DeBoer kill opened a 7-4 lead for Stevens in the second set.
- Endicott rallied to tie the game at 12 on a DeBoer error.
- Burrell and Shankweiler notched kills to open a 17-14 lead.
- Endicott rallied for five straight points to seize control of the set, scoring four of the set's last five points.
- With the teams tied at one set apiece, the teams alternated points until Endicott scored four points in a row to take a 17-16 lead.
- The teams again alternated points to 23-23.
- With DeBoer serving, Bryn Lipton reclaimed the lead for Endicott with a kill.
- Donovan Dey followed with a kill to close the set.
- Trailing for the first time this season, Stevens opened the scoring in the fourth set.
- Returning to its strong-hitting ways, the Ducks made only one attack error in the set against seven errors by Endicott as Stevens attempted to even the match.
- The Ducks used blocks from Burrell and Shankweiler and six assists from Patterson to open a seven-point lead.
- Three Endicott errors and a Lehman kill closed the set.
- In the fifth and final set, four consecutive errors led to Stevens taking a 6-3 lead.
- Endicott would close to within one point (8-7), but a renewed Stevens attack did not allow the Gulls to get any closer.
Match Point
- After regaining a lead in the third set (21-20), senior Jordan Stuart recorded his third kill of the set to close out the match with Wentworth.
- After seizing control of the final set with Endicott, the Ducks closed out the match with a Shankweiler kill.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens totaled nine aces on the afternoon, including seven against Wentworth.
- The Ducks also totaled 15 blocks, including 12 against Endicott.
- Three players tallied all of the blocks against Endicott: Stuart (5), Burrell (3) and senior Ian Bennett (4).
- In the fourth and fifth sets against Endicott, Stevens attacked at a .643 (19-1-28) percentage, while tightening its defense to force 13 errors over the same period.
- Sophomore Jacob Patterson dished out 64 assists over the two matches with only two ball handling errors and no setting errors.
- Stuart also recorded double-digit kills on the afternoon, totaling 15.
- Five different Ducks attacked at a .500 percentage or better in the five-set win.

- "I think what we learned in the match against Endicott is that we need to focus a little more on the conditioning side of things, which I knew we will be able to do as we look towards next weekend.
