CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 13, 2017) – Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse senior
Laura Roberts scored a career-high five goals Monday in the Ducks 15-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer in southern California.
The win moved Stevens to 4-0, while Pomona-Pitzer fell to 3-5.
Freshman
Kyra Bednarski scored four goals with three assists in what was her third-straight game of at least four goals, while senior
Mariel Haubrich tallied five assists to go along with one goal. Junior
Julianna Ricci scored twice, and junior
Cami Santor added a goal and an assist.
As a team Stevens outshot PP 28-20, and went a perfect 13-for-13 on clears. Junior goalie
Stephanie Schnelzer converted four saves in 51 minutes of action to secure her fourth win of the season, while the defense as a whole held its opponent to six goals or less for the third time this season.
Ricci got the Ducks on the board first with a goal four minutes in off a feed from Bednarski, before Haubrich assisted on back-to-back goals from Roberts to make it 3-0 Stevens less than eight minutes in. Freshman
Emily Shanklin got into the scoring five minutes later, but PP ended the run and finally got on the board with 11:13 remaining.
Roberts promptly provided an answer however, followed by two goals from Bednarski to send the Ducks into the break up 7-2.
Roberts tallied a woman-up goal four minutes into the second, followed by scores from Haubrich, Bednarski, freshman
Brianne Salera, and another from Roberts to open up a 10-goal lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
PP responded with two unanswered to get within eight with under eight to play, but goals from Ricci, Santor and Bednarski over the final four minutes prevented the Sagehens from getting within striking distance.
Stevens will continue its spring break trip tomorrow when it battles Whitman at 2 p.m. EST.
