CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 14, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team scored 15 goals in the first half Tuesday in a 19-5 win over Whitman in Southern California.
The win moved the Ducks to 5-0, giving them their best start to a season since 2009 when the team started 15-0.
Ten different Ducks scored goals led by five from senior
Laura Roberts, while senior
Mariel Haubrich set a new career high with six assists. Senior
Kathleen Kalbian scored three times, in addition to multi-goal games from junior
Julianna Ricci, junior
Cami Santor, and freshman
Hannah Condren.
Stevens outshot Whitman 32-12, while on the defense end forced 19 Whitman turnovers. The five goals given up marks the third time this season Stevens has allowed five or less as the defense captained by seniors
Madison Annitto and
Betsy Crossland continues to suffocate its opponents.
Freshman
Kyra Bednarski put the Ducks in front less than two minutes into regulation, followed by scores from Santor and Ricci to make it 3-0 through just three minutes of action. Whitman responded with one of its own shortly after, but Stevens responded with a 11-1 run keyed by three goals from Roberts to make it 14-2 with under nine to play.
Whitman added one more in the opening period, before junior
Bridget Reed put the punctuation point on the big first half with a free-position goal with just over 90 seconds to play to seal a 15-3 halftime lead.
Kalbian continued the barrage early in the second with a free-position goal, before scores from Santor and Roberts pushed the lead to 15 10 minutes into the half. Whitman scored two of the next three around a free-position score from senior
Jess Leiby, but the margin was far too much to overcome as Stevens worked to control possession the rest of the way en route to the win.
The 19 goals were the third most for the Ducks over the last three seasons.
Stevens will be back in action Sunday when it hosts Christopher Newport for the first of three straight in Hoboken.
