HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 19, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team was outscored 3-1 in the second half Sunday in a 7-5 loss to Christopher Newport in Hoboken.
The loss dropped Stevens to 5-1, while Christopher Newport moved to 5-3.
Stevens spread around the scoring with sophomore
Mackenzie Metzler, senior
Mariel Haubrich, freshman
Kyra Bednarski, junior
Cami Santor, and senior
Laura Roberts each contributing goals. Senior
Kathleen Kalbian chipped in with an assist, and led the Ducks with three draw controls.
Stevens outshot Christopher Newport 32-15, and forced the Captains into 13 turnovers. Junior
Stephanie Schnelzer made five saves in the cage.
Bednarski got the Ducks on the board first with an unassisted goal four minutes into regulation, but the Captains responded less than two minutes later before three more unanswered put Stevens in a 4-1 hole. Santor ended the run with under nine to play however, sparking a 3-0 Ducks run to end the half and knot the game at four.
Santor assisted on Haubrich's goal which made it 4-3, before Metzler connected on the equalizer with 15 seconds left on the clock off a feed from Kalbian.
Defense took hold in the second for both sides as the Captains broke the tie after 10 minutes of scoreless action, and added two more over the next 14 minutes to build a three-goal lead. Roberts brought the Ducks closer with her first of the game with under five to play, but it's as close as Stevens would get as Christopher Newport played the possession game over final few minutes to close out the win.
Stevens will continues its three-game homestand Wednesday when it hosts No. 2 Trinity at 6 p.m. in Hoboken.
