No. 3 Men’s Volleyball falls at No. 15 Dominican

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (March 26, 2017)  – Sophomore Dylan DeBoer recorded eight kills, but the No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Volleyball team committed 28 total errors and fell to No. 15 Dominican University (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) Sunday afternoon.

Freshman David Lehman tallied seven kills and three blocks and junior Thomas Burrell had five kills and four blocks for the Ducks, who dropped their second straight to fall 23-4. Stevens has lost consecutive games for the first time since dropping both matches at the Nazareth United Volleyball Conference Tri-Match on Feb. 14, 2016.

Luke Spicer had a match-high 15 kills for the Stars, who improved to 20-2.

Volleys and Points
  • Dominican scored the first three points of the opening set.
  • Consecutive kills by Jeremy Royko and Nick Timreck helped the Stars open a 6-2 lead.
  • The teams alternated points until a Burrell kill and a Royko attack error drew the Ducks even at 12.
  • After being tied at 13 and 14, Dominican reeled off seven straight points to grab control of the set. Stevens errors accounted for four of the points.
  • Back-to-back kills by Joshua Hinton and Lehman, combined with a Burrell solo block, pulled the Ducks to within 22-18.
  • The teams alternated two-point spurts before Spicer's kill of the set closed out the frame for Dominican.
  • Trailing the match 1-0, Stevens opened a 2-0 lead to begin the second set on a kill by Shankweiler and a Michael Kawa attack error.
  • Dominican scored five of the next six points to take a 5-3 lead after a service ace by Spicer.
  • Kills by Stuart and Lehman drew the Ducks to within one (7-6), but a Lehman service error quickly returned the serve back to Dominican.
  • The Stars reeled off 10 of the next 11 points to go in front 17-7. The Ducks committed four attack errors and were blocked twice during the run.
  • The Ducks would remain 10 points back over the remainder of the set with an Alex Coyne kill closing out the second set.
  • In the final set, the teams alternated service errors to begin play.
  • The Ducks reeled off four straight points, punctuated by a block assist by Ian Bennett and Thomas Burrell to grab a 9-4 lead.
  • Dominican rallied to tie the set at 13 after a Royko service error.
  • A strong serve by Grant Burden resulted in a Dominican attack error and a two-point lead for Stevens.
  • Dominican scored five of the next six points to take claim an 18-16 advantage.  
  • Stevens would close to within one point, but were unable to force another tie.

Match Point
  • A Michael Kawa kill closed out the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks were swept for the first time this season.
  • Dominican held the edge in kills, aces, blocks and digs.
  • Jordan Stuart had the only ace for the Ducks.
  • Dominican attacked at a .388 percentage (43-12-80), the highest percentage of any Stevens opponent this season.
  • DeBoer recorded his eight kills on 14 attacks.
