HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 6, 2017) –The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team built a 5-1 lead and never looked back Monday afternoon in a 12-8 win over Rowan in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 3-0, while Rowan fell to 1-1.
Freshman
Kyra Bednarski scored four goals in her third straight multi-goal game, while senior
Kathleen Kalbian, junior
Cami Santor, senior
Laura Roberts, and freshman
Emily Shanklin each tallied two. Senior
Mariel Haubrich recorded three assists, and Kalbian picked up three ground balls.
Junior goalie
Stephanie Schnelzer tallied a season-high 14 saves in the cage to move her season record to 3-0.
Roberts put the Ducks in front just 30 seconds into regulation as she cut into the zone and took a feed from Haubrich to tally the score. Bednarski and Santor made it 3-0 going back-to-back seven minutes later, before Bednarski and Shanklin answered Rowan's goal during the 16-minute mark with one each to put Stevens up four with 13:52 to go.
Rowan rallied however, scoring three unanswered in the final eight minutes of the opening half including two from free position shots to slice the lead to one heading into the break.
Shanklin ended the run less than a minute into the second off a pass from Haubrich, before Bednarski added another off a free position. The Profs battled back with two straight to get back to within one, but Kalbian, Santor and Roberts each scored to extend the lead back to four with 14:12 remaining.
Rowan added one more with under 10 to play and another with under two, however goals from Bednarski and Kalbian sandwiched in-between gave the Ducks enough cushion to seal the win.
Stevens will head west this weekend and take on Pomona-Pitzer and Whitman on March 13 and 14 as part of its spring break trip to southern California.
