Baseball drops non-conference matinee to Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 12, 2017)  – Junior Alex Detweiler drove in a pair of runs, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was unable to hold onto to an early lead, and fell to Farmingdale State College, 14-4, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.

Sophomore Carlos Leon collected two hits and an RBI for the Ducks, who fell to 13-13-1 on the year.

Tyler Schrimpf went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Rams, who improved to 15-12.

"We jumped out to a quick lead, but left a few too many runners on base, even in the innings we scored," head coach Kristaps Aldins commented. "We are looking forward to putting this game behind us and focusing on Elmira this weekend."

Stevens left 12 runners on base, including two in each of the first four innings.

The Ducks jumped on Matthew Constantine (4-2) in the opening inning. Michael Mule' led the game off with a double down the right field line. After Detweiler flied out, Shaye Bartnick and Zeph Walters walked to load the bases. Senior P.J. Wiegartner plated the first run on a fielder's choice groundout. Leon followed with an RBI double, but Matthew Pasko popped out out to leave two runners on.

Stevens found equal success in the second inning. Donny Gherardi started the rally, reaching first after being hit by a pitch. Harrison Kaye reached with a bunt single and Mule' singled through the right side to load the bases. Detweiler became the four straight batter to reach, singling up the middle to push the lead to 4-0. Constantine was able to get out of trouble for the second straight inning, striking out Barnick and Wiegartner and inducing a Walters groundout to end the threat.

Given an early lead, Andrew Hamel struck out five over two scoreless inning before giving way to the bullpen. Bridger Cohen came on and immediately ran into trouble in the third. Farmingdale exploded for seven runs on six hits to break the game open, taking advantage of a pair of Stevens errors. Cohen hit Cam Alfano to start the inning. Nick Attardi singled to short and Vincent Rice followed with an RBI single to get the Rams on the board. After a pitching change, Drew Hanke (2-1) threw the ball committed an error as he tried to pick Attardi off, leading to the second Farmingdale run. Dalton McCarthy doubled in the third run of the inning and Joseph Roche singled to keep the inning going. Domenic Palumbo reached on Hanke's second error of the inning after the pitcher misplayed the infielder's sacrifice bunt attempt. The error scored two runs and gave Farmingdale the lead. The Rams would add two more runs to total seven runs in the frame.

The Ducks would again threaten in the fourth. Bartnick stroked a one-out double to right field and moved to third when Vincent Rice dropped a fly ball off the bat of Zeph Walters, but Constantine retired Wiegartner and Leon, stranding the two runners.

Farmingdale would add three runs in the fourth, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth to round out the scoring.
