No. 3 Men’s Volleyball advances to UVC semis with win over Nazareth

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (April 13, 2017)  – Freshman David Lehman recorded 14 kills on 24 attacks and the third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team advanced to the United Volleyball Conference semifinals with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) victory over Nazareth College Thursday evening.

Junior Thomas Burrell added nine kills and three blocks for the Ducks, who improved to 29-4 on the year.

Sam Bittker had 11 kills for the Golden Flyers, who fell to 21-13.

Volleys and Points
  • A Jake Kemp service error gave Stevens the first point of the match.
  • Back-to-back kills by Gabe Shankweiler and Lehman gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead.
  • After Nazareth tied the set at four, two errors and a Lehman kill opened a 7-4 lead.
  • Consecutive kills by Lehman opened a 12-7 lead for the Ducks, who scored 10 out of 14 points to take control of the opening set.
  • After a Tyler Farnung error gave Stevens a 10-point edge (21-11), the teams alternated points until a Nazareth service error bookended the match for a 1-0 lead for Stevens.
  • The second set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 10 ties. After the teams battled to a 15-15 standoff, the Ducks went on a 6-1 run to take control of the set. A Zachary Gillard service error gave Stevens the serve and kills by Burrell and Shankweiler began the run.
  • Stevens grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match after a Dylan DeBoer kill and a block assist by DeBoer and Stuart.
  • The finals set was the tightest set between the teams. 
  • Nazareth scored three straight points to take a 5-2 lead. 
  • Kills by Lehman and Burrell and a block assist by Burrell and Shankweiler helped Stevens tie the set at 8.
  • The teams traded points until Stevens took advantage of four Nazareth errors to open a 20-17 lead. 
  • The back-and-forth play continued as the teams alternated the final ten points until Stevens closed out the match.

  • The Ducks return to the court for the UVC semifinals against No. 10 New York University. The teams split during the regular season with NYU winning the UVC match and the Ducks earning the victory in the non-conference game at Canavan Arena. Both matches went five sets.
