LA PLUME, Pa. (May 2, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team knocked off regional power Keystone College 8-3 in the Ducks' regular season finale. The team is now 18-21-1 on the year and will await its Empire 8 Tournament fate this week.
Shaye Bartnick got Stevens going right away in the first inning with a 2-RBI single up the middle, staking the Ducks to a 2-0 lead. But the Giants responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to flip the lead.
Both pitchers settled down after that. Stevens starter Dan DiPasquale threw up seven-straight scoreless frames after the first, allowing just three more hits in that time. He finished with seven strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed in 8.1 innings of work.
Stevens tied the game with a run in the third inning when
P.J. Wiegartner doubled down the rightfield line to score
Harrison Kaye. The Ducks took the lead on a two-out RBI single by
Patrick Rood down the leftfield line that plated Bartnick.
Both teams were quiet until the ninth, when Stevens scored two runs on consecutive wild pitches, another on a stolen base and an error and a fourth on an RBI single by Wiegartner.
Keystone loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with one out, putting the game-tying run on deck and creating a save situation for
Drew Hanke. The junior righthander faced just one batter but induced a game-ending line-drive double play to earn the first save of his career.
"I'm just so proud of our guys. Coming off of Sunday's tough result, the effort we saw today is representative of what our program is all about," said head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "DiPasquale was outstanding today. He kept a very good offensive team at bay and had all his arsenal of pitches working."
Â
"Our coaching staff is grateful to our seniors for all their efforts," continued Aldins. "Their passion for the game, their teammates, and the Stevens Baseball program could not have shone brighter than it did today."

Up Next: The field for the Empire 8 Tournament will be announced after this weekend. If they qualify, the Ducks will begin postseason play on May 11.
