Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Charles O'Brien

Men’s Soccer can’t overcome second-half tally and falls to Springfield

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 10, 2017)  – In the first-ever meeting between the programs, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought, 2-1 decision to Springfield College Sunday evening at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. The Pride became a Division III program with the 1995-96 season.

Springfield's Charlie Argyle netted the game-winning goal in the 80th minute. It was his first goal of the season.

Junior Danny Nasti tallied the lone goal for the Ducks, redirecting a strike by classmate Andrew Masur from just beyond the 18-yard box.

Junior Aaron Henry notched a pair of saves for Stevens, including a splendid catch of a sure goal from Springfield's Danny Murphy. With the loss, Stevens fell to 3-2.

Stewart Frank made one save to earn his fourth victory of the season to keep the Pride undefeated.

Pivotal Point
  • After the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the opening half, Springfield applied heavy offensive pressure on the Ducks in the second half.
  • Springfield was able to generate a lot of offense out of deep corners and long throw-ins and the deciding goal came shortly after a Murphy corner, which reached the area in front of Henry.
  • After the long corner from the Springfield midfielder, Arroyo received the ball in the short corner near the far post and quickly crossed the ball to Argyle, who fired it past Henry to give the visitors a 2-1 edge.

Inside the Numbers
  • Springfield outshot Stevens 15-13 for the match, but 9-3 in the second half.
  • A physical game, the teams combined for 27 fouls and four cards.
  • Stevens held a 4-2 edge in corners.

Unsung Hero
  • Senior defender Tommy Dorsay was able to be an integral part of the offense, while helping to keep the Springfield offense in check. The South Brunswick, New Jersey native made several strong runs and was able to move the ball across the midfield line on numerous occasions. On the back line, Dorsay was part of a defensive unit that was forced on its heels numerous times by deep and well-placed corners and throw-ins.

From the Sidelines
  • "Tough, physical game tonight in which we had to deal with a lot of set pieces. Credit to Springfield, they were very well-organized and fought for every ball."
  • "We aim to bounce back on Wednesday against another tough opponent."

Up Next
  • Stevens travels to Pennsylvania to take on Haverford College in a midweek fixture. The Fords were ranked 18th in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Preseason National Rankings.
