King’s career night leads Women’s Volleyball to 10th straight win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 20, 2017)  – Sophomore Casey King recorded a career-high 19 kills and matched a career-best with five aces to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a sweep of New York University (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) Wednesday night in a non-conference match at Canavan Arena.

Senior opposite Emily Singleton filled the stat sheet with six kills, three blocks, three digs and two assists for the Ducks, who improved to 12-2. 

Rayne Ellis recorded 11 assists for NYU, who dropped its fifth straight match to fall to 3-10. The last four NYU losses have come in Hoboken after the Violets dropped three matches at the Ducks Classic.

Volleys and Points
  • NYU scored the first two points of the match on a kill by Kate Glavan and a Stevens error.
  • The first set featured multiple runs by each team. After NYU went up 2-0, the Ducks scored seven straight points to grab a 7-2 lead.
  • The Violets responded with four consecutive to draw within one and then scored three straight points to take a 16-13 lead.
  • The Ducks responded with seven of the next eight points to grab control of the set at 20-17.
  • Kills from the sophomore tandem of Taleen Mitchell and Shelby Stewart bookended a three-point run that brought Stevens to set point.
  • NYU's Kate Glavan served the ball out of bounds to close the set.
  • A block error by Glavan led to a kill by Singleton and an early 1-0 lead in the second set.
  • Three consecutive kills led to the visitors taking a 3-1 lead.
  • Stevens finally draw even at 10 after a King kill and a Daryl Mitchell attack error.
  • An NYU attack error and another King kill led to Stevens taking a 12-10 advantage.
  • Seemingly in control of the match, three errors led to a four-point swing that saw NYU claim a 20-19 lead.
  • The Ducks would respond, scoring six of the final seven points to take a 2-0 lead. King was the catalyst of the run, recording a pair of aces and two kills. Singleton recorded a kill and then paired with classmate McKenzie Kingsbury to block a Glavan attack to round of the scoring.
  • With an opportunity to close out the match, Stevens took control of the final set from the opening serve, scoring eight of the set's first 10 points. Kingsbury and King combined for six of the eight points.
  • NYU would close to within three points (10-7), but Mitchell and King recorded kills from the outside to push the lead back to seven.
  • A kill by junior Emily Piekarski returned the serve back to Stevens with a 22-16 lead. The Ducks would go on to score three of the next four points to end the contest.

Inside the Numbers
  • King surpassed her career-high of 18 kills, set against Springfield, Oct. 14, 2016. The Wallington, New Jersey native previously served five aces against Clarkson on Sept. 10, 2016.
  • King was consistent with her attack, notching six kills in the first set, seven in the second, and six in the third.
  • Stevens nearly forced NYU into an equal number of kills and errors (24-19). The Ducks finished with a .248 attack percentage for the match, only making 16 errors for the match.
  • King's five aces lead all players.
  • Sophomore setter Julie Greco dished out 34 assists. She has recorded 30 or more assists on seven occasions.
  • Senior libero Sydni Horner's 17 digs led all players. The Columbia, Maryland native also recorded a kill.

  • "NYU has some really solid offensive players that we had to figure out how to stop in order to win that match."
  • "We started to serve tougher and spread out our offense a little bit more, which helped. Once we were able to minimize errors and settle in on our side, we were able to feel good about how we were playing and pull out the win."

  • "Emily Singleton was somebody that we relied on throughout the match. She was consistent tonight and picked apart their defense in ways that we knew would work She was very mentally focused and was able to get the job done tonight."
