Aversano’s tally leads Men’s Soccer over Houghton in defensive battle

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 30, 2017)  – Junior Daniel Aversano snapped a scoreless tie in the 39th minute to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Houghton College Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference match.

Junior Haddy Abdelhady added an insurance goal in the 60th minute for Stevens, who defeated the Highlanders for the third time in the last four meetings between the programs. The Ducks improved to 5-4-1 on the year and remain tied with Alfred University atop the E8 standings at 2-0-1.

Junior Aaron Henry made three saves in recording his third clean sheet of the season.

Starting in place of Jordan Crouch, who received a red card in Houghton's 3-1 loss to Sage, Caleb Loew made one save. The Highlanders fell to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Pivotal Point
  • A battle of position over the match's first 38 minutes, Stevens finally broke through on a great individual effort by Aversano.
  • The reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Year won a ball from a Houghton defender, stepped left around the back and fired a ball from the edge of the box past Loew for his third goal of the year.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 12-11 edge in total shots, but in a closely-contested match, each team only had three shots on goal. All three Houghton shots were recorded by Ben Lawrence.
  • The Ducks earned seven corners, while the Highlanders earned six.
  • Houghton's best try came in the first half on Ben Lawrence's rising ball from well outside the scoring area. Henry ranged a few steps to his right and leapt to snare the ball from midair. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native now ranks second in the conference with a 0.973 goals against average.

Unsung Heroes
  • "Coming back from surgery, Patrick Boylan marshalled the defense extremely well."

From the Sidelines
  • "Another three points in league play against last year's finalist was very pleasing."
  • "Performance-wise, we still have a-ways to go and [we need] to get everyone back healthy."
  • "We're excited to play a national powerhouse in F&M Tuesday."

Up Next
  • Stevens travels to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to take on Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday in a non-conference match.
  • The Ducks fell to the Diplomats 3-0 last season in Hoboken.
