HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 9, 2017) – Sophomore
Gabby Saade scored with 3:15 remaining in the second overtime to lift the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Babson College in the opening match of the 14th Annual Engineering Cup on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half,
Julia Panko put the first goal on the board in the opening minute of the second period.
Olivia Butera took the corner kick and Panko took two tries but was able to get her head on the ball and past the Babson goaltender for the marker.
With just 11 minutes remaining in regulation, Kerry Dunn helped Victoria Penta net the equalizer for the Beavers and send the game to overtime.
The match nearly went to PK's to decide it, but Saade put an end to it three minutes before the shootout was necessary.
Notes
- Stevens took 11 shots in the first 10 minutes. Gierschick posted six saves in that time
- The Ducks outshot Babson 15-0 in the first 20 minutes
- Megan Lynes broke up the first good Babson scoring chance at 21:30
- The first half shot count was 25-2. But Gierschick made 12 saves to keep the match scoreless
- Julia Panko led Stevens with six first-half shots
- Gierschick made 17 total saves in the game
- Mahnken made two saves in the match to earn the victory
- Panko finished with seven shots on goal
- Maggie McCabe fired eight shots for the Beavers
- The final shot tally was 46-13
"The team showed a lot of character responding to some real adversity today," said Stevens head coach
Jeff Parker. "I think the conditions were very difficult, but we were able to maintain our focus and found a way to get the second goal. We need to keep moving forward tomorrow against another difficult opponent, but I will be looking forward to seeing how we perform."
Stevens will look to defend the Engineering Cup on Sunday at 3:30 against New York University. Swarthmore won the other match of the day 2-1 over NYU.
