No. 2 Men’s Volleyball wins fourth straight with sweep of Elms

UNION, N.J. (January 26, 2018)  – Graduate student Gabe Shankweiler and sophomore David Lehman each recorded 15 kills as No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball swept Elms College 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) Friday in the opening day of competition at The Clash at Kean, hosted by No. 7 Kean University.

Senior Thomas Burrell added eight kills on nine attacks without an error (.889 attack percentage) for the Ducks, who have won four straight matches to improve to 4-2. After dropping its first two matches against a pair of ranked Division I opponents, Stevens is undefeated against Division III competition. 

Jeremy Torres, the reigning American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Player of the Week, collected 11 kills to lead the Blazers, who fell to 4-1. Stevens has swept both meetings between the programs.

Volleys and Points
  • Martin Acevedo set down a John Dunphy set to open scoring.
  • The Ducks responded with four straight points to grab a four-point lead. Junior Dylan DeBoer recorded consecutive kills to round out the rally.
  • The Ducks were able to race to a 12-5 with four straight points coming with Burrell at the serve.
  • Stevens kept at least a three-point advantage over Elms over the remainder of the set, closing the opening stanza on a Lehman kill.
  • The second set saw Elms jump out to an early two-point lead. The Blazers would hold a lead throughout the early portion of the set, until Stevens rallied on consecutive kills from Shankweiler and junior Cooper Diamond to reclaim the lead.
  • After an Elms timeout, the Stevens attack took over, with kills from four different players pushing the Stevens advantage to three (16-13).
  • Shankweiler set down a pair of sets from Patterson to increase the lead to five and the Ducks scored six of the last ten points to win the set.
  • In the second frame, Stevens scored 20 of its 25 points on kills. The Ducks only committed four errors on 34 attacks. 
  • The final set saw the teams alternate the first eight points of the frame.
  • Burrell set down a Patterson set to open a stretch that saw Stevens score seven of the next nine points to take an 11-6 lead. Four different players recorded a point during the stretch and the Ducks forced a pair of Elms errors.
  • Elms rallied with three straight points to pull within three, but Lehman connected from the outside to spark a 4-0 run, which put the set out of reach.
  • DeBoer successfully converted a Patterson set to open Stevens' largest lead of the match at 19-11.
  • Stevens held its advantage over the remainder of the set, remaining at least five points ahead of Elms at least five points behind.

  • Stevens outhit Elms over the course of the match, .430-.172.
  • Elms held the edge in aces (2-1) and blocks (6-4). 
  • Four different players hit over .400 for Stevens.
  • Led, by Shankweiler's match-high eight, eight different players recorded at least one dig for the Ducks.
  • Elms committed four blocking errors.
  • The Blazers scored first in all three sets.

Unsung Heroes
  • Junior setter Jacob Patterson dished out a season-high 51 assists. As a team, the Ducks hit .430 for the match, including a match-high .471 (20-4-34) in the second set.
  • The Los Gatos, California native's 51 assists were two off his career high, set against New York University on March. 1, 2017.
