ALFRED, N.Y. (January 6, 2018) – A 17-4 run to close out the first quarter propelled the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team over Alfred University 69-58 Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action at Galanis Family Arena.
Senior forward
Megan Brown netted 17 points for the third straight game and matched a career-high with 18 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season in leading Stevens. Making her second career start, freshman
Annetta Panayides posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards to help Stevens win its 21st straight over the Saxons. The Ducks have won three straight to improve to 6-5 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in Empire 8 play.
Bri Hicks scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Saxons. Alfred fell to 2-9 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The Saxons have lost four straight games.
Turning Point
- Finding itself on the wrong side of a 10-6 score following a Bri Hicks jumper, back-to-back triples by freshmen Sam Winter and Christina Li less than 30 seconds apart, gave Stevens a 12-10 lead.
- Hicks sank another jumper to tie the game at 12, but Winter drained another long-range three to again put the Ducks in front.
- Panayides made a layup and Li hit another three to push the lead to 20-12.
- The Saxons would temporarily slow the Stevens offense on an Amanda Figueroa layup, but Li made another three to give Stevens a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
- The Ducks would continue to maintain the advantage over the final three quarters, not allowing Alfred to pull any closer than seven points.
Inside the Numbers
- Four different players reached double figures.
- Li scored a career-high 16 points, helping the Ducks to a 25-3 edge in points off the bench.
- A 50-39 advantage on the boards helped Stevens to an 11-3 margin in second-chance points.
- Winter went 4-of-8 from behind the arc to net 14 points. Stevens shot 31 percent (9-for-29) from three-point land.
