Women’s Tennis defeats St. John Fisher to advance E8 Championship Final

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 12, 2018) - Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team took out No. 3 St. John Fisher 5-0 in an Empire 8 Conference semifinal Friday on Stevens Tennis Courts. The Ducks defeated the Cardinals for the second time this year and move to 9-1. Stevens moves to the E8 Championship Final for the second consecutive season and the ninth time in program history.

Stevens women's tennis team got off to a great start and recorded three convincing doubles flights to go up 3-0. Senior Sydney Zorectic and freshman Alexis Fuda did not drop a single game in the third doubles position, posting an 8-0 win against Jacqueline Chouinard and Grace Peter. Freshman Agatha Malinowski and junior Isabella Calandra continued their winning ways by recording an 8-3 win at first doubles against Kaili Saffran and Cassidy Bell. Senior Julia Earl and sophomore Makenna Sargis battled back from an 0-3 deficit to take the second doubles flight. The duo rattled off eight straight games against Caroline Seaberg  and Mikayla Santulli to win 8-3 and complete the doubles sweep.

Sargis and Earl delivered the final two points for the Ducks to secure their birth into the E8 championship final. The senior captain downed Cassidy Bell 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles flight to give the Ducks a comfortable 4-0 lead with five single flights to go. Makenna followed suit with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Zuzanna Pociecha in the sixth singles position to clinch the match for the Stevens women's tennis team. Sophomore Chelsea Braithwaite, Malinowksi, Fuda, and Calandra all were winning their respective singles flight at the time of the end of the match.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Nazareth College defeated No. 4 Alfred University by a score of 5-0 setting up a much anticipated rematch between the Ducks and Golden Flyers. Stevens will look to avenge their only loss of the season which took place on September 16th up in Rochester, N.Y. It was a very competitive match with the Golden Flyers winning by the slimmest of margins 5-4. The championship final has been moved to an indoor setting due to potential weather conditions. The Empire 8 Conference Championship Final will be held at Washington Township Tennis & Fitness Club in Washington Township, N.J. Action is scheduled to start at 11:00 A.M.
