New Paltz Edges Field Hockey 1-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 16, 2018)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology Field Hockey team fired a season-high 30 shots, but was unable to find the back of the net and fell to the State University of New York at New Paltz 1-0 Tuesday in a non-conference game at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Carly Croteau scored the lone goal of game in the 21st minute and goalkeeper Ryan Dowling made 16 saves for New Paltz, who moved to 9-5.

Freshman Emily Franco made five saves for the Ducks, who fell to 9-5. The teams had combined for 16 goals in their two previous meetings.

Turning Point
  • With the teams locked in a battle of possession, a Stevens foul led to a penalty corner for the visitors.
  • Samantha Ackerman took the corner with Serena Capsello firing a shot, which was blocked by the Stevens defense.
  • The blocked shot trickled to Croteau, who knocked the ball through a crowd and into the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens' 30 shots was the highest by a New Paltz opponent this season. The Ducks fired 22 shots over the game's final 35 minutes.
  • The Ducks earned a season-high 19 penalty corners against six for the Hawks. Stevens earned 17 of its 19 corners in the second half.
  • Senior Hannah Silvestri led all players with seven shots, including four shots on net.
  • Ackerman made a pair of defensive saves.
  • Stevens had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. After a penalty corner, junior Michaela Thompson fired a shot from inside the top of the circle that was tipped near the goal. The tipped ball caromed into the chest of sophomore Skylar Migliaccio and eventually crossed the goal line, but the play was blown dead as a dangerous play.

Unsung Heroes
  • Winning the battle of possession allowed Stevens to hold New Paltz's leading scorer, Jessica Ascencao without a shot on net.

From the Sidelines
  • "Tonight was a disappointing result to a well-fought game. We knew that going in, it would be an even matchup, and unfortunately, it just didn't go our way. It was a good high-intensity game that should prepare us well for our key conference weekend ahead."

Up Next
  • Field Hockey heads to upstate New York for a pair of key Empire 8 Conference games.
  • The weekend opens Saturday when the Ducks take on St. John Fisher before closing with a neutral-site game against Elmira College with both games taking place at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
