Women’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller to Hunter

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 17, 2018)  – Junior Taleen Mitchell recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 20 digs, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to Hunter College 3-2 (15-25, 25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 13-15) Wednesday night in a non-conference match.

Junior Julie Greco dished out 26 assists while classmate Shelby Stewart added 11 kills for the Ducks, who fell to 20-7 overall.

Hunter was led by Kylie Hurst with 11 kills and 23 digs and Taylor Haiduk with 12 kills and 17 digs. The Hawks improve to 19-6.

Volleys and Points

  • Hunter opened the match with a 5-0 lead before committing a service error.
  • Following a Stevens' timeout, the Ducks scored five points to bring themselves within three (9-6).
  • After back-to-back kills and a service ace by the Hawks, Hunter was able to distance themselves from the Ducks to win the first set.
  • The second set opened with a Hunter attack error.
  • The Hawks earned the next three points to make the score 3-1.
  • With Hunter up 5-4, Stevens went on a 5-0 run led by freshman Elizabeth Chu with an ace and a kill by classmate Terence Chan.
  • The Ducks scored 10 unanswered points to close out the set.
  • A kill from junior Kristen Edmiston followed by two kills from freshman Corinne Dougherty and a Hawks attack error gave the Ducks a 4-0 lead to start the third set.
  • Isabelle Lawrence set down a ball to put the Hawks on the board.
  • With the score tied 5-5, two Hawks attack errors and kills from Stewart and Chu gave Stevens the lead.
  • Hunter scored six consecutive points to tie the set once again at 12-12.

  • Stevens earned two points to put them up by one, but three kills and an error by the Ducks put the Hawks up 22-18.

  • With Stevens up 24-22, four unanswered points from Hunter gave the Hawks the win of the third set.
  • Back-to-back kills from Edmiston and Chan opened the fourth set for the Ducks.
  • The two teams alternated points before tying it up 8-8.
  • The Ducks captured the lead after two errors by the Hawks.
  • Hunter was able to tie the score again 13-13 after kills from Hurst and Lawrence.
  • An error by the Hawks and a kill by Stewart gave the Ducks a two point lead.
  • After Hunter clawed back within one point, Stevens delivered seven unanswered points to force the match to a deciding set.
  • Kills from Emily Wasson and Haley Trunkett aided in giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead to begin the final set.
  • Dougherty set down a pass from freshman Kathleen Riegner to put Stevens on the board.
  • Three kills from Hunter and a ball handling error put the Hawks up 7-2.
  • Stevens tied the set 8-8 after a kill from Edmiston and consecutive kills from Mitchell.
  • After alternating points, the set was tied 12-12.
  • Hunter took a 14-12 lead after a kill from Wasson and an ace from Trunkett.
  • The Ducks answered with a Stewart kill.
