Women's Volleyball Falls to Johns Hopkins in Four Sets

BALTIMORE, MD. (October 26, 2018)  – Juniors Taleen Mitchell and Sara Hain combined for 24 kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell to Johns Hopkins University in four sets (26-28, 19-25, 25-16, 23-25) Friday night at the Goldfarb Gymnasium. 

Sophomore Julie Greco dished out 16 assists and eight digs for the Ducks, who fell to 22-8 this season. Tonight's match was the first meeting between the two teams since 2008, where Stevens defeated the Blue Jays 3-2. 

Johns Hopkins was led by Louisa Kishton with a double-double including 13 kills and 18 digs and Simone Bliss who added 17 kills. The Blue Jays improved to 19-6 on the season. 

Volleys and Points
  • Lauren Anthony opened the match with a kill for the Blue Jays.
  • Two attack errors by Johns Hopkins and a kill from Mitchell put the Ducks on the board. 
  • Tied 7-7, Stevens scored five consecutive points to take a 12-7 lead. 
  • The Blue Jays began to chip away at their deficit after a kill by Bliss and two aces from Michelle Abt, making the score 16-13. 
  • Johns Hopkins came within one after another 3-0 run led by kills from Bliss and Kishton.
  • Mitchell answered by delivering two kills and an ace to keep the Ducks in the lead, 20-16. 
  • With Stevens up 21-17, the Blue Jays scored five unanswered points to take a one point lead.
  • After trading points, Eleni Panagopoulos issued two kills to close the first set.  
  • The Ducks came out strong in the second set with a 5-1 lead, including a kill from junior Shelby Stewart and an ace by freshman Elizabeth Chu
  • Johns Hopkins went on a 6-0 run that included two kills and two aces before committing an error, taking a 9-8 lead.
  • The Blue Jays scored three consecutive points, before back-to-back kills from freshman Corinne Dougherty broke the streak. 
  • The teams alternated points but Johns Hopkins was ultimately able to walk away with the second set. 
  • Stevens began the third set with another 5-1 lead, with kills from Dougherty and Hain and an ace by Stewart.
  • The Blue Jays came within two points after kills from Bliss and Morgan Wu.
  • Stevens went on a 7-0 run that included kills by Mitchell and Dougherty and an ace by sophomore Jillian Roumbanis to give the Ducks a 20-11 lead. 
  • Despite three kills from Bliss, Stevens was able to win the third set after Stewart set down a pass from Greco. 
  • The Ducks started the fourth set with a 3-0 lead. 
  • Johns Hopkins scored their first point of the set after a kill by Anthony. 
  • The Blue Jays tied the score at 5 after back-to-back kills from Bliss and Kishton.
  • Stevens took a 8-5 lead after kills by Hain and Mitchell and an attack error by the Blue Jays. 
  • Two kills by Kishton brought Johns Hopkins within one point. 
  • Three errors committed by the Blue Jays helped the Ducks in their attempt to distance themselves. 
  • WIth the Ducks up 20-17, Johns Hopkins scored three points to tie the set. 
  • After a kill by Stewart and an attack error by Johns Hopkins, the Ducks took back a two point lead. 
  • Two kills from Ashley and an ace by Kishton put the Blue Jays up 23-22. 
  • Despite a bad set by the Blue Jays, Johns Hopkins scored the final two points to win the final set. 

Match Point
  • Wu delivered an ace to complete the match. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks had a game-high .462 hitting percentage in the third set. 
  • Stevens held the edge in blocks, 11-4.
  • Simon Bliss led all players with 17 kills.
  • Hain tied her career-high of six blocks.
  • Nicole Hada had a game-high 49 assists for the Blue Jays.
