Women's Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Nazareth in E8 Final

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 4, 2018) - Junior Taleen Mitchell and freshman Kathleen Riegner each recorded double-doubles as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Nazareth College (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 9-25, 6-15) in the Empire 8 Conference championship match Sunday afternoon at Canavan Arena. 

Mitchell had 12 kills and 14 digs, while Riegner dished out 16 assists and 12 digs, as the Ducks fell to 23-10 on the year.  

The Golden Flyers were led by Madison Joseph with 17 kills and E8 Tournament MVP Kelsey Milligan with 12 kills. Nazareth improved to 23-12 this season and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 

Volleys and Points
  • Mitchell opened the scoring after setting down a pass from senior Brianna Perez
  • Stevens took a 9-3 lead after three aces from junior Shelby Stewart.
  • The Golden Flyers scored five consecutive points to shorten Stevens lead, making the score 14-13.
  • Mitchell ended the streak with a kill, followed by an error by Nazareth. 
  • Nazareth tied the set at 17 after kills by Savannah Bothner and Joseph. 
  • Freshman Corinne Dougherty answered with back-to-back kills to give the Ducks a 19-17 lead. 
  • The Golden Flyers took their first lead of the set after a 6-0 run, led by Milligan with three kills. 
  • Junior Sara Hain set down a pass from Perez, but Milligan closed the set with two kills.
  • Nazareth committed an attack error to give the Ducks the first point of the second set. 
  • The teams traded points before tying the set at 9. 
  • Milligan issued a kill before the Ducks scored three straight to take a 12-10 lead. 
  • The Golden Flyers tied the set at 14 after two errors by Stevens and a kill by Joseph. 
  • A Nazareth service error followed by back-to-back Dougherty kills put Stevens up 17-14. 
  • The Ducks began to pull away after kills from Mitchell and Hain. 
  • Nazareth came within three points after a kill by Delaney Martin and an ace from Danielle Synowski, but Hain set down a pass from Riegner to score the final point of the set. 
  • A kill by Riegner followed by two Nazareth errors gave Stevens a 3-0 lead to begin the third set. 
  • Joseph issued two kills followed by a Ducks error to tie the set at 3. 
  • Stevens broke away with a 6-0 run after five errors by the Golden Flyers and an ace by Stewart.
  • Nazareth came within two points after kills from Jessica Barry and Carmen Sapp, followed by an ace by Barry to make the score 21-19. 
  • The Ducks won the third set after an ace from freshman Elizabeth Chu and a kill by Mitchell. 
  • Sapp set down a pass from Barry to start the fourth set. 
  • Junior Kristen Edmiston put the Ducks on the board with a kill. 
  • The Golden Flyers took an 16-5 lead after a 6-0 run that included two kills from both Sapp and Newcomb.
  • Stevens ended the streak with two kills from Stewart and an additional kill by Edmiston.
  • Nazareth scored four unanswered points to send the match to a deciding set. 
  • The Ducks committed two errors at the beginning of the fifth set.
  • Mitchell delivered a kill to put Stevens on the board. 
  • With Nazareth up 4-1, two errors by the Golden Flyers brought the Ducks within one point. 
  • Nazareth extended their lead 7-3 after a kill by Newcomb and an ace by Bothner, before an error by Marjorie Didas. 
  • A 7-0 run by the Golden Flyers put them up 14-4 and despite two more points for Stevens, Nazareth scored the final point to win the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held Nazareth to .048 hitting percentage in the second set. 
  • The Ducks held the edge in blocks, 6-4.
  • Savannah Bothner led all players with 31 digs.
  • Stewart registered five blocks and four aces. 
  • The Golden Flyers outhit Stevens .207 to .080. 
  • Stevens falls to 3-4 all time in the Empire 8 Tournament against Nazareth. 
  • Today's win marks the first Empire 8 title for the Golden Flyers since 2013.
