HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 17, 2018) – The No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team hit .363 on its way to a comfortable three-set sweep of Massachusetts Institute of Technology inside Canavan Arena on Saturday. It was the first United Volleyball Conference action of the year for the Ducks.
After Stevens had won the first set 25-22, MIT opened an 8-2 lead in the second in a bid to knot the match. But with
Dylan DeBoer serving, the Ducks rallied for five-straight points to erase the early deficit. It was part of a 10-3 run that put Stevens in the lead.
The Engineers of MIT clawed back in front for a bit in the middle of the set, but with his team trailing 20-17,
Thomas Burrell served a 5-0 Stevens run fueled by an ace and two
Gabe Shankweiler kills that put the Ducks ahead for good.
Setter
Jacob Patterson got the last three points for the Ducks as they snuffed the MIT rally to take a 2-0 lead.
Stevens continued to stretch its advantage in the third and won going away 25-14. Shankweiler had a 5-0 service run and led the team with five kills in the set.
Patterson handed out 40 assists in the three sets, and Shankweiler led all players with 19 points, 15 kills and three aces.
DeBoer and Burrell added nine kills each, and
David Lehman reached double figures with 10. DeBoer also led the team with six digs.
Cooper Diamond was in on three blocks for the Ducks.
MIT was led by Travish Smith, who had nine kills.
