No. 3 Men’s Volleyball sweeps Baruch for third straight victory

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 24, 2018)  – Thirteen hitters recorded at least one kill as the third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept Baruch College (25-11, 25-19, 25-13) Saturday in a non-conference match.

Freshman Ryan Byrne matched a career-high with seven kills and graduate student Gabe Shankweiler collected four kills and four aces in one set of work to lead Stevens. The victory was the third straight for the Ducks, who improved to 12-3 on the year.

Baruch's Stephen Roach led all players with eight kills, but the Bearcats committed 34 errors on the day in falling to 5-7 on the year. The loss snapped Baruch's two-match winning streak.

Volleys and Points
  • The opening set saw Stevens jump out to an early 4-1 lead. After a Baruch service error began the match, junior Dylan DeBoer set down a Jacob Patterson set to give Stevens a 2-0 lead.
  • Stevens would hit a match-high .483, collecting 17 kills against just three errors in the team's best statistical performance of the day.
  • Kills by Patterson, DeBoer and Shankweiler led to an 11-6 lead for the guests.
  • A Nicholas Godino kill briefly halted the Stevens offensive machine, but junior Cooper Diamond set down a Patterson set to return the serve to Stevens.
  • The Ducks then reeled off nine straight points to open a 14-point lead (21-7).
  • A Thomas Burrell kill brought the Ducks to set point and a Shankweiler kill closed out the opening set.
  • The second set saw the hosts grab an early 3-2 lead after consecutive successful kills.
  • A Roach service error briefly tied the score at 3, but Baruch ran off five straight points to open its largest lead of the day at 8-3.
  • After a timeout, the Ducks collected eight of the next nine points to take an 11-9 lead. Five Baruch errors and kills from Byrne and Jonathan Frenzel keyed the run.
  • The teams alternated the next series of points before a Byrne kill and a Diamond block handed Stevens a 22-17 lead.
  • A blocking error briefly held Stevens from closing the set, but sophomore Kyle Warnock pinned down a Burden set to give Stevens a commanding two-set lead.
  • The final set again began with Baruch taking an early lead. Kills from Roach and Godino and a pair of Stevens attack errors helped the home school to a 6-4 lead.
  • A Stephen Lopez service error returned possession to Stevens and the Ducks took advantage, scoring the next nine points. Five Baruch errors and a pair of aces by freshman Jack Bittker spurred the run. The Penfield, New York native leads the team in aces per set.
  • Sophomore Andrew Amerman and graduate student Ian Bennett keyed another long Stevens run, combining for three kills and a block, to give the guests a 21-8 lead.
  • Baruch reeled off four straight points to claw back into the match at 21-12, but Stevens scored four of the next five points to close out the match.
