GLASSBORO, N.J. (February 28, 2018)  – Senior
Alex Detweiler reached base three times and junior
Danny Poidomani struck out a pair in his second start of the season, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Rowan University 3-2 Wednesday at the Rowan Baseball Field.
Freshman
Thomas Paulich went 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double for his first collegiate hit and RBI, and senior
Tommy Baronner drove in a run for the Ducks, who fell to 1-3 on the year.
Dan Shane went 3-for-4 and scored all three runs for the Profs, who won their season opener. To date, the Ducks have been the season-opening opponent for three straight teams.
Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. Poidomani allowed a pair of runs over 4 1-3 innings with two strikeouts. Andrew Carter drew the opening-day nod for Rowan and allowed two runs on five hits over five innings.
With the teams tied at two, junior
Charlie Ruegger (0-1) struck Frank McHugh and induced a harmless grounder to short by Matt Edwards. Shane worked a full-count walk and promptly attempted to steal second. The ensuing throw from junior catcher
Matt Branco went into the outfield, allowing Shane to score, breaking the 2-2 tie. After consecutive walks, Ruegger was able to retire Anthony Harold on a pop up to end the threat. The unearned run was the only blemish on the day for the Morris Plains, New Jersey resident, who allowed three hits and struck out three in 3 2-3 innings.
The Ducks threatened in both the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to get a run across. Drew Ryback (1-0) earned the victory, spinning two innings of hitless relief. Jeremy Dyzenhaus struck out three to earn his first save.
"Both Danny and Chuck pitched well enough to allow us to win," said head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "We had some chances offensively, but weren't quite able to come up with that big hit when we needed it. We were knocking on the door, but left a few too many guys in scoring position. Rowan is a good team and we played them tight on the road. Tough to come away with the loss, but our guys battled hard and were in a position to win the game once again."
The Ducks had their best opportunity of the afternoon in the fourth. Detweiler walked to lead off the frame. Junior
Donny Gherardi stroked a one-out single to right center. Paulich lofted a double down the left field line for his first career hit and RBI. With runners on second and third and only one out, Carter was able to get ahead of junior
Matthew Pasko and was able to retire the Stevens shortstop on a groundout. Branco hit the ball hard but right at left fielder Frankie Aiello to end the rally.
