No. 2 Men’s Volleyball sweeps Bard for sixth straight win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 10, 2018)  – Freshman Jack Bittker recorded a career-high 10 kills as No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Volleyball swept Bard College (25-9, 25-17, 25-11) Saturday in a United Volleyball Crossover match, hosted by New York University.

Freshman Ryan Byrne and graduate student Ian Bennett each had five kills for the Ducks, who won their sixth straight match to improve to 15-3 on the season and 4-0 in UVC play. Stevens remains atop the UVC standings with five conference matches left on the schedule.

Jelani Bell-Isaac and Tyler Zowaski each had four kills for the Raptors, who fell to 1-14 and 0-4 in league play.

Volleys and Points
  • Errors were the story of the day, with Bard committing 31 errors on the afternoon.
  • In the opening set, a block by junior Cooper Diamond and sophomore David Lehman produced the first point of the match.
  • Stevens scored three of the first four points of the frame to seize control of the set.
  • A kill by senior Thomas Burrell spurred a run that saw Stevens grab three of the next four points to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Burrell continues to top the nation in both hitting percentage and blocks per set. The Somerset, New Jersey native also added two blocks.
  • The Ducks put together a six-point run and three, three-point runs to close out the first set. Lehman converted sets from junior Jacob Patterson and graduate student Gabe Shankweiler to give Stevens a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The second set was the closest between the teams.
  • Stevens collected eight of the first ten points of the set to take an 8-2 lead. Bard committed three errors during the stretch, but efficient hitting by Bennett and sophomore Jonathan Frenzel produced quality strikes that Bard was unable to dig.
  • Bard closed to within three points on a ball-handling error by Grant Burden, but Stevens quickly extended its lead on kills by Andrew Amerman and Byrne.
  • Stevens scored four of the next five points to put further separation between the teams and closed out the second set when Bennett pinned down a Burden set.
  • In the final set, the teams alternated the first six points, however, four consecutive points led to a 7-3 lead for the nationally-ranked Ducks. Frenzel and senior Nick Orlando each collected kills during the key stretch.
  • A Zowaski kill briefly returned the serve to Bard, but a service error returned it to Stevens, where Bittker, the team leader in aces, scored back-to-back aces in helping the Ducks to a 12-4 edge.
  • After exchanging the next series of points, four straight Bard attack errors helped Stevens cross the 20-point mark.
  • A Josh Kim kill drew Bard to within 23-11, but a Frenzel kill drew Stevens to match point.

Match Point
  • A Jelani Bell-Isaac attack error closed out the match. It was Bard's 13th error of the final set.
