No. 2 Men’s Volleyball tripped up by No. 9 New Paltz

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 18, 2018)  – Graduate Gabe Shankweiler recorded 10 kills, but No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Volleyball fell to No. 9 State University of New York at New Paltz in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-21) Sunday in a United Volleyball Conference crossover match hosted by The Sage Colleges.

Junior Dylan DeBoer added nine kills and an ace for the Ducks, who saw their eight-match winning streak come to an end. Stevens fell to 17-4 on the year and 6-1 in UVC play. With two matches remaining in conference play, the Ducks are tied atop the league standings with New Paltz and No. 13 Vassar College. Stevens no longer controls its own destiny for the conference's regular season title. The Ducks have a pair of league matches with St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College next weekend in upstate New York. If the Ducks win both matches and New Paltz tops both Vassar and No. 14 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the road to the NCAA Tournament would go through New Paltz. A Vassar victory combined with two Stevens wins would give the Ducks the UVC regular season title and championship tournament hosting rights. A tie between Vassar and Stevens would go to the Ducks because Stevens swept the Brewers on February 18.

Ryan Cole recorded a match-high 19 kills for the Hawks, who improved to 15-5 on the year and 6-1 in the UVC.

Volleys and Points
  • A Nick Smith kill opened the match scoring.
  • It was New Paltz that jumped out to an early lead, scoring three straight points, punctuated by a Smith ace.
  • A double block by DeBoer and senior Thomas Burrell briefly returned the serve to the Ducks, but New Paltz ran off five straight points, including consecutive Cole aces, to take a 10-4 lead.
  • A Smith service error gave control of the serve back to Stevens. The offense responded three straight points with David Lehman at the serve. A blocking error by Cole pulled Stevens within two.
  • The two-point margin would prove to be as close as Stevens would get in the set. Smith set down a Matthew Grace set and then fired his second ace of the set to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • A normally tight Stevens defense allowed the Hawks to hit .478 in the opening set. The Ducks came into the match holding opponents to a .153 attack percentage.
  • DeBoer pinned down a Patterson set to give Stevens a 1-0 lead at the start of the second set.
  • A Cole error and a Burrell kill opened a 3-1 lead for Stevens.
  • Back-and-forth play highlighted most of the play in the second set as the teams combined for four ties over the first 14 points.
  • A pair of tandem blocks by Shankweiler and junior Cooper Diamond put Stevens in front 9-7 and forced a New Paltz timeout.
  • Stevens would hold its advantage throughout the middle portion of the set, growing the lead to as many as four at 16-12 after a DeBoer ace. The four-point lead marked the largest Stevens advantage on the day.
  • The Hawks rallied with a run of their own, scoring five straight points to jump out in front 18-17.
  • A Diamond kill again evened the score at 18.
  • The teams traded the next 12 points, before New Paltz closed out the second set with back-to-back kills by Cole and Smith.
  • New Paltz opened the final match on a three-point run, taking advantage of a pair of Stevens errors.
  • DeBoer converted a Joshua Hinton pass to pull Stevens within two, but the Hawks tallied consecutive points to reclaim its three-point lead.
  • The teams traded three-point runs late in the third set with Shankweiler and Burrell closing out the Stevens run with a rejection of a Cole attack.
  • Shankweiler pinned down a Grant Burden set, but an Anthony Bonilla kill brought New Paltz to match point. Burden finished the day with 11 asssits.

Match Point
  • A service error closed out the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • New Paltz hit .410 for the match; the highest for any opponent this season.
  • The Ducks hit .269 (30-12-67). The number marked the lowest mark for the team in six matches.
  • Stevens' 67 attacks were the third-lowest mark of the season.
  • Stevens held the edge with five blocks, but the Hawks recorded eight aces.
  • Shankweiler was the lone Duck to reach double-digits in kills.
  • Sophomore Jacob Patterson led Stevens with 15 assists, however, the total was the lowest for the Los Gatos, California native in multiple-set appearances.

Coach Speak
  • "Today we were outplayed by a good New Paltz team. We didn't bring the intensity or executed to the level we need to in order to be successful. Our defense was below average today. For us to win, we must make stops and we just simply didn't make enough today as we allowed a season-high in hitting percentage."  - assistant coach Amable Martinez

Up Next
