Women’s Basketball falls to Rochester in NCAA First Round

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 2, 2018)  – Senior forward Megan Brown and sophomore Alison Criswell each recorded a team-high 16 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to No. 16/No. 17 University of Rochester, 69-57 Friday evening in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Freshman Maddi Hahn added 10 points for the Ducks, who saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end. Stevens, winners of the Empire 8 Conference championship, concludes the 2017-18 season with a 15-13 mark. The Ducks have posted a winning record in each of Coach Haughey's six seasons at the helm.

Senior forward Alexandra Leslie led Rochester with 16 points and Lizzy Atkinson added 12. The Yellowjackets improved to 22-4 on the year, and will take on No. 17 Marymount University (Va.) in the second round of the tournament. The Saints outscored MIT, 21-13, in the final period to down the Engineers, 58-54 in the opening game of the evening.

Brown, the Empire 8's Co-Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player of the E8 Championship, finishes her career on Castle Point with 1,110 points and 922 rebounds. The Laurel, Maryland native leaves the program with the eighth-highest career point total and the third-best rebounding total.

Empire 8 Freshman of the Year Christina Li finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Turning Point
  • After battling back from a nine-point deficit, a Criswell layup brought Stevens to within five.
  • A good defensive series forced a Leslie miss and the Ducks had a chance to trim the Rochester lead to a single possession.
  • A steal by Lena Ethington led to a transition basket for the Yellowjackets right before the first quarter buzzer, resulting in a seven-point lead after the opening 10 minutes.
  • The home team had possession of the basketball to begin the second stanza and Jillian Silvestri connected for a layup to push the lead to nine.
  • Rochester would go on to score 13 of the game's next 15 points to take a  37-19 lead.

Inside the Numbers
  • Rochester shot 51.6 percent from the field in opening up a first half lead. The Yellowjackets finished the game shooting 26-for-57 (45.6%). Rochester's shooting percentage was the highest by any Stevens opponent this season.
  • The Ducks shot 35 percent from the floor, including 37.5 in the second half, when Stevens rallied to close the margin to 12 points in the final quarter.
  • Rochester controlled the boards, holding a 40-37 advantage, however Stevens out-rebounded the home team on the offensive glass, 12-9.
  • Criswell led all players with four steals. As a team, the Ducks had 11 against only eight for Rochester. The Arlington, Virginia native's 16-point performance marked a new career high. Criswell's previous high was 13, scored against Harwick College on Jan. 13.
  • Brown led all players with eight rebounds.
  • Stevens had a 32-24 advantage on points in the paint, however, Rochester scored nine extra points from beyond the arc.
  • Brown led the team with two assists, marking the 11th time this season the forward topped the team in the statistic.
  • Hahn was one of just two players on either team to reach double figures in points in the first half.
  • The Ducks won the opening tip and scored the first points of the contest on a Hahn layup. A three-pointer by the Mickleton, New Jersey native gave Stevens its other lead of the game at 7-5.
  • Senior Sydney Darby scored two points and pulled down six boards in 25 minutes in her final collegiate game.

From the Court (Coach Haughey)
  • "I am extremely proud of all this team accomplished. You never want it to end, mainly because we have to say to goodbye to Meg and Syd. They have given a ton to this team and to the women's basketball program and will leave their mark on it for years to come."
