WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 25, 2018) –
Madison Gemma and
Corinne Loncar had three hits each, but the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell to Stockton Univerity 3-0 and 7-3 in the Ducks' home opener on Sunday. Stevens also saw a quality start from
Christine LaRochelle in game one.
LaRochelle pitched a complete game and walked just one batter in seven frames to keep the Ducks in the game, but she was outdueled by the tag team of Marissa Semeraro and Victoria Torp, who earned the win and save, respectively, and combined for the shutout.
Gemma and Loncar both went 3-7 over the two games.
Gina DeOliveira and
Olivia Gemma were the only other Ducks to have more than one hit on Sunday.
After 10 scoreless frames, Madison Gemma started the first Stevens rally with a single in the fourth inning of game two. Her sister Olivia also singled, and with two outs
Amanda Delorme singled to left field to score the first Stevens run.
Down 7-1 entering their last licks, the Ducks fought to the end. DeOliveira and Madison Gemma singled and both came around to score on
Olivia Gemma's 2-RBI double to the fence in right-center. It was Stevens' only extra-basehit of the afternoon.
Julia DeCandia hit the next ball right on the screws, but also right at the shortstop to put an end to the rally and thus, the game.
Carli Shaw finished with three RBIs to lead the Ospreys in game two.
Jessica Masur took the loss for Stevens.
