Groder’s 2-Out RBI Double Fuels Last-Inning Comeback for Softball vs. NYU

THE BRONX (March 28, 2018) – With the team down to its final out and about to be swept by NYU on Wednesday, senior Farryl Groder of the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team scorched a double down the rightfield line to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-2 lead for the Ducks. Stevens tacked on an insurance run to win the game 5-3 and earn the split.

Entering the final inning of game two, the Ducks were trailing 3-1 and had scored just three runs over 13 innings. Down to their 42nd and final out of the day, the Ducks did manage to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Gina DeOliveira.

The sophomore singled to rightfield to score Victoria Kapp and cut the NYU lead in half. Then, Samantha Schattin singled down the leftfield line to put two on with two out for Groder.

The Yardley, Pennsylvania native smoked a hard shot down the rightfield line, scoring DeOliveira easily to tie the game and chasing Schattin all the way from first with the game's go-ahead run.

Corinne Loncar followed with an RBI single up the middle for an insurance run the provided the final margin of victory.

Marissa Cappello, who pitched the final three innings to earn the win, did not allow a hit in the seventh to nail down the victory. Stevens starter Jessica Masur also pitched well, allowing just one earned run in four innings of work.

Diana King took the tough-luck loss for the Violets. She tossed a complete game and none of the five runs she surrendered were earned. NYU was undone by three errors, while the Ducks played flawless defense.

NYU won game one, 4-2. Julia DeCandia had the only Stevens RBI in the game. Christine LaRochelle turned in a quality start with three earned runs allowed in her complete-game effort.

Melissa Alfonso, Olivia Gemma, Madison Gemma and Loncar all had multiple hits on the day for the Ducks. Aside from Groder, the Gemma sisters had the only other extra-basehits for Stevens.

Up Next

The Ducks will begin Empire 8 play on Saturday when they host Elmira College at the Weehawken Waterfront beginning at 1 p.m.
