No. 25 Women’s Lax Dominates No. 20 Fisher

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 31, 2018) – The No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team subdued No. 20 Saint John Fisher College in convincing fashion on Saturday with an emphatic 11-4 home victory. The Ducks scored the final five goals of the first half to take a 7-4 halftime lead and put a stranglehold on the game.

The game was a rematch of last year's Empire 8 Championship Game, won by Fisher to send them to the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Logan Chase of the Cardinals scored the first goal of the game in the opening minute, but Mackenzie Metzler and Hannah Condren both converted free position shots in the next three minutes to give Stevens its first lead.

Fisher tied the game at 22:41 and the teams were knotted for the next seven minutes.

There Stevens began its game winning rally. Kyra Bednarski found paydirt three times in the run, and Metzler and Emily Shanklin also scored during the streak.

In the second half Fisher once again drew first blood, but the Ducks put together four unanswered goals to put the game completely out of reach.

Stevens goaltender Stephanie Schnelzer was outstanding, stopping nine shots and allowing just four goals to earn her seventh win of the year. The senior stopped all three Cardinal free position attempts and was a key to the game as both teams fired exactly 24 shots but ended with drastically different goal totals.

The Ducks led the ground ball count 15-11, though Fisher took 12 of the game's 17 draw controls.

  • Bednarski finished with four goals and two assists
  • Metzler had three goals
  • Cami Santor and Julianna Ricci also scored for Stevens
  • Hannah Condren had two helpers as well
  • Stevens is now 2-0 in the Empire 8 with wins against the Cardinals and Nazareth College already

"We played stellar defense and had good possessions on attack today," said head coach Celine Cunningham. We did a nice job on our ride. We transitioned the ball much better than our last game. We had a challenging week, starting with Naz, continuing with No. 12 Wesleyan and now today's win. I'm really proud of this group's ability to look for next play, stay focused, and maintain discipline."
