Men’s Tennis earns regional win over local rival, #32 NYU

  • Short Story: Wins in two of the three doubles flights and four of the six singles flights powered the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team to a 6-3 regional victory over area rival #32 New York University Wednesday, in a non-conference match at the Stevens Tennis Courts.

How It Happened
  • The duo of senior Danny Polk and freshman Bryan Szayna earned the first win of the match, taking an 8-1 decision at second doubles.
  • NYU evened the match in the first doubles position, but the Ducks snagged the pivotal second doubles win when senior William Persson and freshman Gabriel Sifuentes earned an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. 
  • NYU took the win in the fourth singles slot to even the match and Polk fell to #45 Umberto Setter at No. 1 singles to give the visiting Violets a 3-2 lead.
  • Szayna topped NYU's Michael Li in straight sets at No. 3 singles to even the match and Persson rallied to defeat Rahul Das in the three sets at the second slot to reclaim a one-point edge for Stevens. Persson dropped the first set, won a tiebreaker in the second to even the match before earning a 6-4 score in the final set.
  • Sifuentes earned the match-clinching point with a straight set win at sixth singles. Sifuentes defeated Stefan Rodic 6-2, 6-3 to give Stevens the match.
  • Freshman Mark Kanevsky, the reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, won a third-set super tiebreaker over Aaron Mackie at fifth singles to provide the day's final margin of victory.
