HOBOKEN, N.Y. (April 21, 2018) –
Shaye Bartnick was 3-3 with a walk and two RBIs as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team salvaged a split in its doubleheader with SUNY Oneonta by winning the nightcap 10-5 at home on Saturday. Oneonta won to opener 9-8 in extra innings.
After dropping the opener in heartbreaking fashion, the Duck fell behind 4-0 in game two after John Zinko's bases-clearing, 3-RBI triple in the first inning and an unearned run in the second.
But the Ducks rallied back;
Carlos Leon plated
Raymond Cortes III with a sac fly in the second to give the Castle Pointers their first run.
In the third, Stevens exploded for four runs to take the lead. Bartnick knocked a ground-rule double to score
Donny Gherardi and came around himself on
Alex Detweiler's sac fly.
Nathan Zuckerman earned a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, and Cortes scampered home on a wild pitch to put the Ducks in front.
Tommy Baronner smashed a solo homer over the tall fence in right in the fourth to give Stevens some breathing room, but Zinko answered with a dinger off the scoreboard to make it a one-run game again in the fifth. After game one went extras, game two was amended to end after seven.
Matthew Pasko, Gherardi and Bartnick all ripped RBI hits in the fifth to break the game open from 6-5 to 9-5. Bartnick's was a triple, leaving him just a homer away from the cycle.
The Ducks added a run when
Ambrose Consol scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to produce the final margin.
On the hill
Andrew Hamel earned his first win of the year, striking out eight in four innings of work without allowing an earned run.
Joseph Deitz worked the next two frames and punched out three hitters while allowing just one run, and
William Korosec closed the door with 2 K's in the seventh.
In game one, Stevens leapt out to a 5-0 lead but coughed up six runs in the fifth.
Both teams scored runs on sac flies in the ninth, but Dalton Beatty's 10th inning homer went unanswered by the Ducks as they fell in the opener 9-8.
