Softball Edged by No. 15 Fisher

WEEHWAKEN, N.J. (April 21, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team was edged out 1-0 and 2-0 (in 10 innings) in an epic battle for first place in the Empire 8 with national No. 15 St. John Fisher College in Weehawken on Saturday.

Lindsey Thayer threw all 17 innings for the Cardinals, earning both shutouts and both wins as Fisher remained perfect in the Empire 8.

For Stevens, Saturday marked their first league losses of the year and an end to their program-record 15-game win streak.

Stevens' Christine LaRochelle allowed a run in the first inning of her game one start, but otherwise matched Thayer zero-for-zero. She struck out five and scattered five hits.

There was drama in the seventh, as the Ducks put runners on second and third with just one out, but Thayer wiggled out of the jam to escape with the win.

Marissa Cappello dueled with Thayer in game two – neither hurler allowed a run in the first nine innings. It was only when the frame started with a runner placed on second in the 10th that Fisher managed to score off Cappello; a two-run two-out home run by Sarah Kubik provided the only scoring of the game.

Cappello also struck out five and allowed just four hits and one earned run in her 10 innings of work.

  • Stevens centerfielder Farryl Groder made an excellnt diving catch in centerfield in the eighth inning on game two with a runner on third and only one out, if it dropped or the runner at third tagged, Fisher would have won the game.
  • Gina DeOliveira scalded a ball with two outs in the home half of the 10th, but it was run down by the Fisher rightfielder for the final out of the afternoon
  • Melissa Alfonso and Groder finished with two hits on the day for the Ducks
