WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 22, 2018) – Senior
Marissa Barnes was a perfect 5-for-5 as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split with Nazareth College in the final Empire 8 games of the regular season for the Ducks. Stevens won 5-1 in the nightcap after being nipped 3-2 in the opener.
The Ducks end the Empire 8 season with an 11-3 conference record, smashing the previous program record for league wins in a season, which was eight.
Game Two
In addition to her perfect day at the plate, Barnes made an excellent catch in the second inning with two on and two out to keep the Golden Flyers off the scoreboard.
Samantha Schattin echoed that with a sliding catch against the leftfield fence in foul territory for the second out during the fifth inning.
In between, Naz scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth.
The Ducks answered in the home half as Barnes,
Olivia Gemma and
Cara Napolitano – all seniors – singled to start the frame and Gemma came around to score on heads-up baserunning with two outs to knot things up again.
Stevens took the lead in the next frame. Senior
Corinne Loncar doubled to left field, classmate
Lauren Shirley singled and Barnes provided what turned into the game-winning RBI with a sac fly to score Loncar.
The Ducks added three insurance runs in the sixth.
Melissa Alfonso, after catching 31 innings this weekend, came through with a hit, as did Groder. Loncar knocked her second double in as many innings for an RBI as the Ducks pumped the lead up to 5-1.
Marissa Cappello struck out six and allowed just the one run and two hits on her way to the win. She is now 9-2 on the year.
Game One
The Ducks' first three hitters of the game -
Mary Catherine Ottelien, Farryl Gorder, and Corrinne Loncar - all singled to load the bases with nobody out, but Naz was able to make two plays at the plate to keep the Ducks off the scoreboard in the inning.
Stevens had two hits from Napolitano and an RBI from
Olivia Gemma, but the Golden Flyers' Madison Joseph hit a homer in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and give Naz the game one win.
- The senior class combined for 18 of Stevens' 19 hits on the day
- Loncar was 4-7 with two doubles and a walk
- Napolitano stole a base in game one
- The Ducks struck out 11 Flyers over the two games
