BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 24, 2018) –
Marissa Cappello tossed all eight innings without allowing an earned run as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team knocked off No. 6 Moravian College 2-1 in extra innings in game two of their doubleheader on Tuesday. The Greyhounds won game one, 5-2.
After seven shutout innings for both sides in game two, the top of the eighth began with pinch runner
Cara Napolitano placed on second base.
Gina DeOliveira moved her over with a sac and
Samantha Schattin came through with an RBI single to left-centerfield to plate the first run of the game.
With two outs,
Corinne Loncar singled down the leftfield line and Schattin scampered home with what turned out to be a huge insurance run.
Cappello struck out the first two hitters she faced in the home half, and though she allowed a two-out RBI single, she got the final batter to ground out to
Katherine Tirabassi at third to nail down the win.
It is the highest-ranked team with Ducks have defeated since knocking off No. 5 St. John Fisher 2-1 on April 2 of last year.
- Cappello pitched all eight innings, scattered five hits and struck out five.
- She earned her 10th win of the season
- Her counterpart Amanda Carisone also carried a shutout into extra innings and allowed just five hits.
- Schattin was the only player on either side to have more than one hit in the game
In game one, the four runs Moravian scored in the second inning proved too much to overcome. Shirley had the big bat for the Ducks, with an RBI double in the fourth inning and a solo homer in the seventh – her fourth of the season – that provided both Stevens runs.
Christine LaRochelle pitched a complete game and just one of her five runs allowed were earned. The Ducks made five errors in game one but rebounded to field every ball cleanly in the nightcap.
