WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 29, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept Susquehanna University 2-1 and 4-2 on Sunday to end the regular season with a 21-11 record.
Game One
Stevens starter
Christine LaRochelle carried a perfect game into the fifth and a shutout into the seventh inning for the Ducks. She scattered five hits and allowed just one run with two outs in the seventh. A groundball to
Corinne Loncar at short ended the game and gave the junior her ninth win of the year.
The Ducks scored both of their runs with the help of River Hawk errors; Susquehanna made four miscues in the game, while Stevens played flawless defense.
In the first frame,
Samantha Schattin began the game with a walk and tahnks to an error came all the way from first to score on a sac bunt by
Farryl Groder as the Ducks took a 1-0 lead after just one out.
They scored again in the third;
Gina DeOliveira singled to begin the frame and Loncar also added a hit.
Madison Gemma walked to load the bases, and a two-out throwing error allowed what turned into the winning run to score. Though lacking an RBI, the Duck offense did enough to support LaRochelle and earn the victory.
Game Two
The second game was similar to the first. Stevens was up 1-0 by the time the first out was recorded, and starter
Marissa Cappello took a perfect game into the fourth.
Backing up to the opening rally, the Ducks had a leadoff double by Schattin, who came around to score on an RBI single by Loncar. After an error,
Olivia Gemma stroked a two-out RBI single through the left side to make the score 3-0 after one.
Susquehanna broke up the perfecto by scoring one run in the fourth, but Cappello left two runners stranded to keep the Ducks in the lead.
Stevens countered with a run of its own in the home half of the inning, when
