Stevenson stuns No. 13 Men’s Lacrosse in double overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (April 3, 2018)  – Senior Tommy Dawson recorded his third consecutive four-goal performance, but Ethan Christensen scored 25 seconds in the second overtime period as Stevenson University rallied to stun the Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Lacrosse Team 13-12 Tuesday evening in a thrilling non-conference game at Mustang Stadium.

Junior attackman Max Bailey had four assists and senior John Boutureira added his fifth hat trick of the year for Stevens, who fell to 9-2 on the year. The setback snapped Stevens' six-game winning streak.

Christensen had a goal and four assists and Kyle Karsian had four goals and an assist for the Mustangs, who scored three times in the final 4:37 to force overtime. The Mustangs improved to 4-5 on the year and hold a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.

"It was a tough game tonight," said head coach Gene Peluso. "We played hard and fought for more than 60 minutes, but, hats off to Stevenson. They made one more play than we did."

Senior Bryan Rogers collected a pair of goals and assist and sophomore Brendan Monteleone found the back of the net twice for Stevens, who was held to its second-lowest offensive output of the season. Freshman Ryan Caplis added a goal and classmate Ryan Gebhardt had an assist to round out the Stevens scoring.

Junior Carson White made 13 saves to take the loss. Sam Ross had 17 saves for Stevenson to earn the win.

Defensively, Stevenson outshot Stevens 52-40 on the evening, including a 26-12 margin in the second half, although Stevens held a 29-26 edge in shots on goal. Stevens went 18-for-21 on the clear for forced Stevenson into committing 21 turnovers. The Mustangs went 23-for-27 on the clear and held a decisive 26-3 edge in the 'X'. The advantage in faceoffs led to Stevenson holding a 41-26 edge in ground balls. Sophomore Alec Caseiro led all players with four caused turnovers and junior Daniel Crotty led Stevens with five ground balls. Senior Scott Wedgeworth had Stevens' all three of Stevens' faceoff wins.

"I am proud of our guys and really look forward to watching them as we get back to conference play," Peluso added.

Karsian opened the game's scoring just 34 seconds into the game. Stevens erupted for four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Rogers beat Ross to open the stretch. Consecutive goals from Dawson extended the run and Monteleone's first of the game closed it. Stevens has put together at least one four-goal run in every games this season. Collin Tucker found the back of the net with just under 90 seconds left in the first to stop the Stevens run.

Caplis and Karsian exchanged goals to start the second quarter. Dawson scored consecutive goals for the second time in the game to give the Ducks a 7-3 lead. Gray McKee trimmed the lead to four before Boutureira and Rogers scored to close out the first half.

McKee and JT Thelen beat White in the early stages of the third quarter before Monteleone and Boutureira beat Ross to push the lead back to five. Chris Hammerquist begin Stevenson's comeback with his seventh of the year and back-to-back markers from Harrison Faecher and Karsian drew the Mustangs within two. Boutureira completed the hat trick with 13 minutes remaining to push the Stevens lead back to three. White made a pair of saves to keep the hosts off the board, however Thelen scored twice in a 57-second span to pull Stevenson within one. Karsian scored his 12th of the of the year with just 19 seconds to force overtime.

The Ducks scored twice with the man advantage and held Stevenson to 2-of-10.
