Baseball Holds on to Top Scranton in Slugfest

SCRANTON, Pa. (May 1, 2018)Tommy Baronner had five hits and the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team survived a wild seven-run ninth inning to withstand the University of Scranton 16-14 on Tuesday night.

  • Baronner finished 5-6 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, just a home run short of the cycle.
  • Thomas Paulich knocked in four runs for the Ducks, including an RBI double
  • Alex Smith earned the win in relief for Stevens

Stevens leaped out to an 11-0 lead after four-and-a-half innings. Seven of the nine Ducks in the lineup reached base multiple times in those five frames alone

Yet the Royals fought back, scoring five in the fifth and five more in the sixth to close within one.

The Ducks countered with two runs in the seventh, courtesy of an RBI single by Matt Branco and a bases-loaded walk by Alex  Detweiler .

The Castle Pointers added three more in the ninth, which seemed inconsequential at the time but turned into the winning margin. Donny Gherardi stroked an RBI double down the leftfield line and Thomas Paulich drove in the final two runs with a single to right.

Scranton scored four runs in the ninth, cutting the Stevens lead down to two and bringing the potential winning run to the plate. But the game ended on a baserunning mistake; a ball in the dirt sent the runner on first moving, but not the runner on second. The Ducks executed the ensuing rundown 2-3-6 to end the game and escape the jam.

  • Stevens pounded out 21 hits
  • Starter Chandler Brierley carried a shutout into the fifth inning
